🦷💨 What does “laughing gas” actually do?

Despite its nickname, nitrous oxide doesn’t actually make your child laugh—and it doesn’t put them to sleep! 😊

Nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation commonly used in pediatric dentistry to help children feel calm, comfortable, and less anxious during dental treatment.

While breathing nitrous oxide, your child:

✨ Stays awake and responsive
✨ Can talk and communicate with us
✨ Feels more relaxed and at ease
✨ Is often less bothered by the sights, sounds, and sensations of treatment

What about safety? 💙

Nitrous oxide has a long history of safe use in pediatric dentistry when appropriately administered and monitored. The amount your child receives can be adjusted throughout the appointment.

When treatment is finished, the nitrous oxide is turned off and your child breathes 100% oxygen for several minutes, helping clear the remaining nitrous oxide from their system.

Because nitrous oxide works—and wears off—quickly, most children are back to feeling like themselves within just a few minutes.

So, “laughing gas” doesn’t mean sleeping or giggling. Think of it as a little extra help to make a dental appointment feel calmer and more comfortable. 🦷✨

Parents and guardians often share the importance of being “honest with their children”. While we agree honesty is best, sometimes leaving the explaining to us can make for a more pleasant dental experience. It’s not about hiding anything, it’s about years of experience and perfecting safe techniques that have a great outcome. We strive to make any operative appointment as comfortable as possible for our little patients. You can help us by following these tips. 🦷🪥❤️
