🦷 Tooth Extraction: Post-Op Care & When to Call Your Dentist 🦷

Just had a tooth removed? A little discomfort is normal, but proper care can help you heal faster and avoid complications!

✨ Post-Op Care Tips:
✅ Bite firmly on the gauze as instructed to help stop bleeding.
✅ Rest and take it easy for the first 24 hours.
✅ Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling.
✅ Eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup (not too hot!), eggs, or smoothies eaten with a spoon.
✅ Keep taking any prescribed medications exactly as directed.

🚫 Avoid These Things:
❌ No smoking or va**ng.
❌ No straws—the suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a painful condition called dry socket.
❌ Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours.
❌ Stay away from crunchy, spicy, or hard foods until your dentist says it's okay.

🚨 Call Your Dentist ASAP If You Notice:
🔴 Bleeding that won't stop after applying pressure with gauze.
🔴 Severe pain that gets worse after 2-3 days instead of improving.
🔴 Swelling that continues to worsen after 3 days or spreads to your eye or neck.
🔴 Fever or chills.
🔴 Pus or a bad taste/drainage coming from the extraction site.
🔴 Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
🔴 Numbness that does not improve after the anesthetic should have worn off.

💡 Remember: Every patient's healing process is different. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it—it's always better to call and ask!

📞 At Burkett Dentistry, we're here to help guide you through every step of your recovery. Your comfort and healing are our priority! 💙

🦷 "My dentist said I have a cavity, but it doesn't hurt... what's the worst that can happen?" 🤔

Unfortunately, cavities don't always hurt right away. 😬 In fact, many start silently and get bigger over time.

⚠️ Here's what can happen if a cavity is ignored:

🦠 The cavity grows deeper into the tooth
😖 Tooth sensitivity or severe pain can develop
💥 The tooth can crack or break
🩹 You may need a root canal and crown instead of a simple filling
🦷 In some cases, the tooth becomes infected and may need to be extracted

The good news? 💙
✨ Small cavities are usually easier, faster, and less expensive to treat than waiting until they become a bigger problem.

Just because it doesn't hurt today doesn't mean it won't hurt tomorrow! Regular dental exams and X-rays help catch problems early and keep your smile healthy. 😁🪥

🦷✨ Why Are Dental X-Rays So Important? ✨🦷

You may be wondering, "Why do I need X-rays if my teeth don't hurt?" 🤔

Dental X-rays allow us to see what isn't visible during a regular exam! They help us detect:

🔍 Cavities hiding between teeth
🦴 Bone loss caused by gum disease
🦷 Infections or abscesses at the root of a tooth
🌱 Impacted or developing teeth
🛠️ Problems with existing fillings, crowns, or other dental work
⚠️ Early signs of issues before they become painful or expensive to treat

The truth is, many dental problems don't cause symptoms until they've become more serious. Catching them early means simpler treatment, less discomfort, and often lower costs! 💙

Modern dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation and are considered a safe and essential part of maintaining your oral health. 😊

📅 Don't wait for pain to tell you something is wrong. Preventive care and routine X-rays help keep your smile healthy for years to come!

📍At Burkett Dentistry, we're here to help you stay one step ahead of dental problems—because your smile deserves the best care! 🪥✨

🦷 "But My Tooth Doesn't Hurt..." 🤔

One of the most common things we hear is:

"Why do I need an extraction if my tooth doesn't hurt?"

The truth is, not all dental problems cause pain right away. A tooth may need to be extracted because of:

🔹 Severe decay that cannot be restored
🔹 Infection visible on an X-ray
🔹 Advanced bone loss from gum disease
🔹 A cracked or fractured tooth below the gumline
🔹 Wisdom teeth causing damage to neighboring teeth

Many dental issues develop silently, and by the time pain appears, the problem may be much more serious.

That's why routine exams and X-rays are so important—they help us find problems before they become emergencies. 🚨

If your dentist recommends an extraction, don't hesitate to ask questions! We're here to explain your options and help you make the best decision for your oral health. ❤️

🦷 Truth Tuesday! 🦷

Did you know? You can have gum disease and not feel any pain. 😲

Many people assume that if their teeth and gums don't hurt, everything must be fine. The truth is that gum disease often develops silently, with little to no discomfort until significant damage has already occurred.

🚩 Signs to watch for:
✔️ Bleeding when brushing or flossing
✔️ Persistent bad breath
✔️ Red, swollen, or tender gums
✔️ Receding gums
✔️ Loose teeth

The good news? Early detection and treatment can help protect your smile and your overall health! Regular dental cleanings and exams are one of the best ways to catch problems before they become bigger (and more expensive) issues.

💬 Truth Tuesday Question: Were you surprised to learn that gum disease can be painless? Let us know below!
