Today is the last day of February which means 2 things, 1, it's almost Spring! 🌺 and 2, it's the last day of Children's Dental Health Awareness Month! 🦷

For our 3rd and final installment post for Children's Dental Health month we will be talking today about the importance of both Sealants and Fluoride for children.

What are Sealants and Fluoride? Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in things such as water, rocks, soil, plants and even air. It's also a mineral found in your bones and your teeth. Dentists use fluoride to help strengthen enamel and to help prevent cavities. Small amounts of fluoride is also commonly found in various different toothpastes and mouthwashes. Fluoride can be applied to your child's teeth as early as 6 months old. Sealants are thin, protective plastic coatings put on your child's molars to help prevent cavities as they grow. According to the CDC, "Once applied, sealants protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to 4 years." Sealants are applied after your child's 1st permanent molars come in which should be around age 6 and then again around age 12 for their 2nd permanent molars.

Both of these treatments are done to help prevent cavities from forming and other various teeth problems that occur down the road. And as a fun fact for you, we at Lynn Family Dentistry are firm believers in fluoride treatments, not only children and teens, but for adults of all ages as well! Fluoride continues to help prevent cavities even as an adult. We recommend our patients get fluoride at least once a year as part of their dental checkup!

We hope you enjoyed this mini series of posts to help spread awareness and celebrate Children's Dental Health Month! Be sure to make your child's next or first dentist appointment today!

Hello! As our next installment post for National Children's Dental Health Awareness Month we will be discussing the importance of good dental care at home and routine dental cleanings and visits! 😁

We'll start off with the importance of early dental hygiene at home. Dental hygiene should start as early as ages 1-2 or when your child's first tooth comes in. The best way to keep your kids teeth clean at this age is to use a child size tooth brush and by brushing their teeth 2x a day with either water and or a small amount of fluoride free toothpaste making it safe for them if they swallow it. Around ages 7-8 your child will be ready for a larger toothbrush and brushing with children's toothpaste for 2 minutes 2x a day. By this age your child should also be flossing at 1x per day with a floss pick to make it easier for them to do.

Next we will be discussing the importance of routine check ups and cleanings for your child. Your child should have their first dental check up by ages 1-2 or when they get their first tooth. This first initial visit with your child's dentist is one of the most important dental appointments for your child. At this appointment your dentist will examine your child's teeth and teach you how to properly clean and care for your child's teeth. Your child be seeing their dentist 1x every 6 months to ensure they're on the path of good oral hygiene!

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children in the United States. Poor oral care at such a young age can cause serious problems down the road such as infections, disease, loss of teeth, cavities, and other major dental problems. So inconclusion, make sure you're talking to your kids about the importance of taking care of their teeth and a reminder to book your child's next dentist appointment today, they'll thank you later! 🦷

In our 3rd and final post for National children's Dental Health Awareness Month we will be discussing the importance of sealants and fluoride!

It's February which means it's Valentine's Day! But did you know February is also National Children's Dental Health month? Well, now you do! 🦷

Did you know that 1 in 5 children ages 5-11 have had at least 1 cavity and that 1 in 7 adolescents ages 12-19 have had at least 1 cavity in their lifetime? That's 20% of children and 13% of adolescents with untreated cavities, most of which are in lower income households and neighborhoods as opposed to those in higher income households. These cavities left untreated at such an early age can cause the following:
-Pain
-Infection
-Problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning

There's good news though! Cavities in young children and adolescents can be both preventable and treatable! Over the next couple of weeks we will being telling you all the different ways to help prevent cavities and treat them, and also the importance of routine dental visits and good dental hygiene at home.

Stay tuned for our next post where we'll be discussing the importance of routine dental visits and dental care at home! 🦷
