Can a dental implant be placed the same day a tooth is removed? In the right case, yes.

Immediate implant placement can allow Dr. Ross Wlodawsky to remove a tooth and place the dental implant during the same procedure.

For appropriately selected patients, this approach may offer:

• Shorter overall treatment time
• Fewer surgical procedures and appointments
• Reduced overall treatment costs
• Success rates comparable to staged implant placement

The key is knowing when immediate placement is appropriate. Bone quality, the condition of the extraction site, and your individual needs all play a role in determining the right approach.

Dr. Wlodawsky also shares his expertise with fellow dental professionals through his self-study CE course, “Implant Site Decision Tree: Immediate or Delayed Placement?” The course focuses on evidence-based case selection, surgical and prosthetic planning, and techniques that can help improve predictability.

Another full-arch transformation and a great example of the teamwork that goes into these cases.

Dr. Ross Wlodawsky worked alongside prosthodontist Dr. Cathy Dallow of Commonwealth Prosthodontics to plan and complete this patient’s full-mouth reconstruction. Dr. Wlodawsky handled the surgical side of treatment, while Dr. Dallow led the restorative process and design of the final smile.

That collaboration is an important part of full-arch care. Each specialist brings a different area of expertise to the case, with the same goal: restoring function and creating a smile that feels natural for the patient.

Thank you to Dr. Dallow and the Commonwealth Prosthodontics team for their partnership and for sharing this case with us!

There’s a lot that goes into planning dental implant surgery, and the provider you choose is an important part of that process.

If you’re considering a dental implant, start by asking:

• What surgical training does my provider have?
• What happens if I need bone grafting?
• What anesthesia or sedation options are available?
• How will my implant placement be planned?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have extensive surgical training focused on the face, jaws, and mouth. This includes a detailed understanding of the bone, nerves, and surrounding anatomy involved in dental implant placement, as well as training in anesthesia and bone grafting procedures.

At Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery, our oral surgeons use their surgical experience and advanced imaging to evaluate each patient’s anatomy and carefully plan implant placement.

When a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone can begin to change over time. Without the stimulation from the tooth root, bone in that area may shrink, and nearby teeth can begin to shift.

Planning early can make a difference. Depending on your needs, socket preservation, bone grafting, or dental implant placement may help maintain the jawbone and support future tooth replacement.

See what can happen after tooth loss and why timing matters.

Wisdom teeth can change quite a bit between the early teen years and young adulthood.

As they continue to develop, their roots grow longer and become more established in the jaw. This is one reason oral surgeons often recommend wisdom teeth removal between ages 17 and 25, before the roots are fully developed.

An early evaluation can help determine how your wisdom teeth are developing, whether removal is recommended, and the best time to plan for it.

Don’t wait for wisdom teeth to start causing problems. Schedule an evaluation with one of our oral surgeons.
