A filling can serve a tooth well for years, but it still needs to be checked as the tooth, bite, and restoration change over time.
New sensitivity, pain when chewing, a rough or broken edge, or food repeatedly catching around the same tooth are good reasons to schedule an examination. These signs do not automatically mean the filling must be replaced, but they can help your dentist decide whether the tooth needs monitoring, repair, or additional support.
The goal is to protect healthy tooth structure and address small problems before they become harder to manage.
