To ensure that you keep bacteria and plaque away, it is best to clean your tongue twice a day. A good rule of thumb is to brush or scrape your tongue right after you brush your teeth. Doing it before bed will help reduce the bacteria able to grow, which reduces the chance of morning breath in the morning.

Although it’s true that children will eventually lose their baby teeth, taking care of those primary teeth is still incredibly important. Baby teeth, in essence, prepare the way for permanent teeth by creating and holding the space for permanent teeth to come. Taking the time to teach your children good oral health habits will help them make habits that will help to prevent dental problems in the future.

If you follow the below tips, you will be sure to leave any appointment with a smile.

🦷 Before the teeth erupt, be sure to clean your child’s mouth with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush at bath time. This will help prepare the baby for future teeth cleaning.

🦷 Brush your child’s teeth at least twice a day with a toothbrush for children. Many people assume baby teeth are not important, but they in fact help prepare the surface for permanent teeth.

🦷 If your baby is placed to sleep with a bottle, use nothing but water. The sugary drinks will cause bacterial acid to attack the teeth for an extended period of time. The first sign of a cavity is discoloration and minor pitting.

🦷 Once the teeth begin to develop, if your child prefers to be breastfed often or for long periods of time, this can cause severe tooth decay if your child has been introduced to other foods/beverages in his/her diet.

🦷 Never dip a pacifier in anything sweet.

🦷 Never attach a pacifier to the child’s crib or body with a string, ribbon, or cord.

🦷 Make sure to follow meals with water to remove any excess food in the teeth.

🦷 At age 2, start brushing with a small amount of toothpaste (non-fluoride). Wait until your child is 3 (when they know not to swallow) to use fluoride toothpaste.

A water flosser works really great for braces and normal mouths alike! The water flosser will shoot water where you direct it in your mouth (between your teeth and gums), and effectively remove the debris that brushing missed, just like flossing! There are many different brands you can purchase, so do your research, look for deals, or ask a Hudec Dental professional for their recommendation!

Today is National Toothache Day.

Are you worried that you suffer from a cracked tooth? Do you know that a root canal treatment can actually save your tooth?

What is a cracked tooth?

A cracked tooth means a crack extends from the chewing surface of your tooth vertically toward the root. The tooth is not yet separated into pieces, though the crack may gradually spread.

Identifying symptoms:

Cracked teeth show a variety of symptoms, including erratic pain when chewing or pain when your tooth is exposed to temperature extremes. In many cases, the pain may come and go, and your dentist may have difficulty locating which tooth is causing the discomfort.

How late is too late?

Early diagnosis is important in order to save the tooth. If the crack has extended into the pulp, the tooth can be treated with a root canal procedure and a crown to protect the crack from spreading. If the crack extends below the gum line, it is no longer treatable, and the tooth cannot be saved and will need to be extracted. That’s why early treatment is important. A cracked tooth that is not treated will progressively worsen, eventually resulting in the loss of the tooth. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in saving these teeth.

The treatment:

The treatment you receive for your cracked tooth is important because it will relieve pain and reduce the likelihood that the crack will worsen. Once treated, most cracked teeth continue to function and provide years of comfortable chewing. Unlike a broken bone, the fracture in a cracked tooth will not heal. In spite of treatment, some cracks may continue to progress and separate, resulting in loss of the tooth. Placement of a crown on a cracked tooth provides maximum protection, but does not guarantee success in all cases. There are many different types of cracked teeth. The treatment and outcome for your tooth depends on the type, location and extent of the crack.

Do you think you show the symptoms of a cracked tooth? Remember, early diagnosis is important.
