If you take medication for a health condition, dental work can feel like one more thing to worry about. It doesn't have to be. We handle these cases carefully, in step with your doctor.

Some medications change how we plan a procedure. Certain bone medications, for example, may need to be paused for a stretch of time, with bloodwork to confirm things are safe, before an extraction. That step exists to protect you, and we coordinate it so you're not left figuring it out alone.

If you're on a Medicare plan with dental benefits, some of those benefits reset at the end of the year and disappear whether you used them or not.

The two treatments people on Medicare put off the most are extractions and deep cleanings. Most plans cover a lot, and since we're in-network, the co-pays stay manageable. What holds people back is apprehension. An extraction feels like a big deal, so it's easy to say "not right now."

In dentistry, what you postpone only gets worse. Put off an extraction, and one day you wake up swollen, in pain, with an infection, needing antibiotics and a wait before anything can be done. A deep cleaning reaches the buildup under your gums that a regular cleaning leaves behind. A checkup twice a year won't guarantee you never have a dental problem. What it does is catch the problem while it's still small.

That's the whole point of a preventive visit. We get a look at what's going on before you can even feel it, back when a spot of decay is tiny and a gum issue is easy to turn around. Caught early, most things are simple to handle. Left alone, those same things grow into something that hurts more and costs more.

I've watched this play out for years. The patients who come in twice a year, like clockwork, tend to have the easiest visits and the fewest surprises. It's the best habit you can keep for your teeth, and it's the one that saves you the most trouble down the road.
