The matter of RECRUITMENT...

Wow. I mean, building a team is no easy feat.
And irrespective of how far we've come, and how much we have yet to go, the matter of recruitment has always had a lot to unpack. Take a look at Mary Richards trying to hire for the WJMT-TV, Channel 12 news team. A snapshot of the professional settings which were some of the first that I ever saw.

Today, I still see some of this.
And I see so much more.
For example, AI is a newcomer to the mix.
Another example: Gen Z looks at work ethic in an entirely different manner than the Boomers, the X-ers, and the Millennials. Incidentally, I do not contend that these shifts in thinking are misguided. All I'm saying is that the problem of recruitment is as challenging as it ever was.

At the end of the day, when a group of people come together to work towards a larger goal... creating that group is tough.

And today.

DENTISTRY FROM TIMES OF YORE...

Having a toothache is part of the human experience. We all have had one or may get one down the line. As a result, we have had dentists for thousands of years, although how we know dentistry today did not begin until the mid-1800s.
The first known text mentioning dentistry was written in 5000 BC by the Sumerians of Babylonia and simply states “tooth worms” as a cause of dental decay.
The earliest known reference to a “dentist” is from 2600 BC.
Hesy-Re, an Egyptian scribe, was described as “The greatest of those who deal with teeth…” This would have been a great advertisement, except he was already dead when it was
inscribed on his tomb.

We've all heard the stories of DENTISTRY FROM TIMES OF YORE, which for us may be reaching back no further than the 18th century... most notably Washington's wooden teeth. And I'll get to those dentures in a second.

Let me just say that as people lost teeth to decay, they often had implants of a different kind, which we seldom speak about today: their new teeth were frequently taken from the mouths of the dead, or even from living donors, to be implanted.

In Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, the character Fantine sells her teeth for 40 francs.

In the Coen Brother's True Grit, the ancillary character only known as "The Bear Man" (Ed Corbin) offers to sell to Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) some teeth that he just extracted from a dead man, who was found hanging from a tree.

And what about George Washington? His dentures were not wooden. They are thought to have been a combination of animal bone and teeth taken from the enslaved.

And you thought YOU had problems with your teeth. Well, you may have some and we can help. Thankfully, we can solve them so much better now.

Finally, just for fun, our slideshow includes some marketing designed to get thee to a dentist!

Who's your Huckleberry Dentist?

Why, none other than Dr. John Henry Holliday.

A legendary figure of the American West, "Doc" Holliday was a dentist by trade, although he is best known for his exploits as a gambler and gunfighter. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in 1872, at the age of 20. He practiced dentistry in Griffin, Georgia, for a short time before moving west to seek a drier climate for his tuberculosis. He practiced dentistry in a few different towns in the West, including Dallas, Texas; Pueblo, Colorado; and Deadwood, South Dakota.

By all accounts, Holliday was a competent dentist with successful practices. He was known for his gentle touch and his ability to make his patients feel comfortable. However, his career as a dentist was relatively short-lived. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis at a young age, and the disease eventually took his life in 1887.

Despite his short career as a dentist, Holliday is still remembered as a skilled dentist and a fascinating figure in American history. He is often portrayed as a wild and reckless gambler and gunfighter, but he was also a talented dentist who cared for his patients with compassion.

TOOTH LOSS AND HEARING LOSS ARE CONNECTED...

A growing body of evidence suggests a link between hearing loss and tooth loss. This link is thought to be due to a number of factors, including:

🔰 Inflammation: Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body, including the ears. This can cause inflammation, which can damage the hair cells in the inner ear and lead to hearing loss.
🔰 Poor blood flow: Poor blood flow to the ears can also lead to hearing loss. This can be caused by gum disease, which can damage the blood vessels in the mouth.
🔰 Nutritional deficiencies: People with poor oral health are more likely to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D and zinc. These deficiencies can contribute to hearing loss.

A study published in 2013 found that people with tooth loss were more likely to have hearing loss than people with a full set of teeth. The study also found that the more teeth a person lost, the worse their hearing was.

Another study, which came out in 2015, found that people with gum disease were more likely to have hearing loss than people with healthy gums. The study also found that the severity of the gum disease was linked to the severity of the hearing loss.

These studies suggest that there is a clear link between hearing loss and tooth loss.

In addition to the factors mentioned above, there are a few other possible explanations for the link between hearing loss and tooth loss. For example, people with poor oral health may be more likely to smoke or drink alcohol, both of which can contribute to hearing loss. Additionally, people with poor oral health may be less likely to get regular hearing tests, which can delay the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss.

PATIENTS DON'T LIKE TO COMPLAIN...
..which means that in the moment when they actually say what's bothering them, we have to pay close attention.

Look at Sara, here, trying to explain her concern through a gif.

Don't be fooled by her casual tone.

When we speak, I will be asking Sara some questions to see if her wisdom tooth may be showing signs of an infection.

Here are 10 common signs that your wisdom tooth may be infected:

❗ Pain in or around the wisdom tooth. The pain may be constant or throbbing, and it may get worse when you chew or bite down.

❗ Swelling and redness of the gums around the wisdom tooth. The gums may also be tender and painful to the touch.

❗ Bad breath or taste in the mouth. This is due to the bacteria that are growing in the infected tooth.

❗ Difficulty chewing. The infected wisdom tooth may make it difficult to chew food on the affected side of your mouth.

❗ Difficulty opening your mouth wide. This is due to the swelling of the gums around the wisdom tooth.

❗ Fever. A fever is a sign that your body is fighting an infection.

❗ Chills. Chills are often accompanied by a fever.

❗ Swollen lymph nodes in your neck. The lymph nodes are part of your body's immune system, and they can become swollen when you have an infection.

❗ Pus draining from the infected tooth or gums. Pus is a sign that there is a bacterial infection present.

❗ Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods. This is due to the nerve damage that can occur with an infected wisdom tooth.

Any kind of infection in the oral cavity can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious health problems. Here's a video that explains why this can happen: https://fb.watch/mjt5pMnCSz/

YOU HAVE CAVITIES!

But I'm not talking about those kinds of cavities... I'm talking about the holes in your head! The cavernous regions in your skull.

The oral cavity of one the multiple that are in your skull. And guess what? Those holes in your head have unfettered access to one another.

That's why an infection in your mouth could be so concerning! Not just because of the problems it could cause to your teeth, but to anywhere else in your body.

Consider the cavernous sinuses, which are right above your mouth. They are a network of blood vessels located near the brain and other important structures, such as the optic nerves.

Bacteria and viruses that enter the mouth can easily spread to the cavernous sinuses through the bloodstream or through the eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat.

In fact, we see this often.
Once an infection has spread to the cavernous sinuses, it can quickly spread to other parts of the body, including the brain, eyes, and face. This can lead to serious complications, such as meningitis, brain abscess, and vision loss.

WHAT IS AOB?

Assignment of benefits (AOB) is a legal contract that allows a dental insurance policyholder to transfer their insurance claims rights to a third party, such as a dentist or dental practice. This third party, known as the assignee, can then file a claim with the insurance company, make treatment decisions, and collect insurance payments on behalf of the policyholder.

When a policyholder signs an AOB, they are essentially giving the dentist permission to bill their insurance company directly for the cost of treatment. This can be helpful for policyholders because it can speed up the claims process and ensure that they receive the full amount of their insurance benefits.

However, if a policy does not honor AOB, then the patients will be responsible for paying for the cost of treatment at the time of service. They will then have to file a claim with their insurance company and wait for reimbursement. This process can take several weeks or even months, and there is always the risk that the policyholder will not be reimbursed in full.

As a result, patients who have to pay at the time of service and wait for direct reimbursement from their policy tend not use their insurance. The process is intimidating and uncomfortable.

This can be a financial hardship for patients even though they have insurance, which is supposed to alleviate the patient's expenses.

Here are some specific reasons why patients may be disappointed if they have to pay at the time of service and wait for direct reimbursement from their policy:
✖ Paying up front can be a financial hardship.
✖ Patients may have to pay a large amount of money at the time of service.
✖ They may not be reimbursed in full by their insurance company.
✖ The process can be a hassle or too confusing to execute.
✖ They may have to wait a long time to receive their reimbursement.
✖ The claim may be denied outright.

Subsequently, patients will opt not to use their insurance at all, which ends up serving the bottom line to the insurance company.
