As dentistry faces new challenges, our profession has been in a similar situation not too long ago. As a recent dental graduate in 1988, HIV entered the scene and the main focus of dentistry was safety and infection control. Heat sterilization, disinfection, and disposables became the norm and and every patient is still treated with utmost precaution and safety. I love dentistry and am proud to be surrounded by a wonderful team that also strives to go above and beyond to care for our patients. One of the most challenging procedures in dentistry is restoring a single front tooth. Making the work invisible on the tooth itself and having it match the neighboring teeth requires an understanding of light, color, dental anatomy, techniques, and dental materials. In essence, it takes great effort to fool the eye into not noticing that something is different about a single tooth in a pleasing smile. Sometimes, a dentist may prefer to fix two or more teeth with the same material to help make everything look more harmonious. This option is always more costly and can compromise the natural integrity of otherwise virgin and healthy adjacent teeth. Understanding the the limitations of our materials, methods, and knowing the source of the problem is critical to making the right treatment choices.

Here is a case where we were able to restore a single front tooth fairly successfully with a very conservative approach, direct composite bonding. The viewer is encouraged to use a large monitor in order to appreciate how microscope magnification can help us better see and address dental treatments. We hope you enjoy!
