🦷 Periodontitis & Type 2 Diabetes: More Than Oral Health

A large retrospective cohort study following over 56,000 patients with Type 2 Diabetes found that those with periodontitis had a significantly higher risk of serious complications, including stroke, heart attack, arrhythmias, dementia, retinopathy, and kidney disease after starting insulin therapy.

Although overall mortality was similar, periodontitis clearly emerged as an independent risk factor for long-term cardiovascular and microvascular complications in diabetic patients.

🔬 These findings reinforce the importance of periodontal screening and treatment as part of standard diabetes care.

Un estudio retrospectivo de gran escala con más de 56,000 pacientes con Diabetes Tipo 2 demostró que aquellos con periodontitis presentaron un mayor riesgo de accidente cerebrovascular, infarto, arritmias, demencia, retinopatía y enfermedad renal tras iniciar terapia con insulina.

Aunque la mortalidad global no fue diferente, la periodontitis se identificó como un factor de riesgo clínicamente relevante para complicaciones cardiovasculares y microvasculares.

Um grande estudo retrospectivo acompanhando mais de 56.000 pacientes com Diabetes Tipo 2 mostrou que aqueles com periodontite apresentaram maior risco de AVC, infarto, arritmias, demência, retinopatia e doença renal após o início da insulinoterapia.

Apesar de a mortalidade geral não ter sido diferente, a periodontite se destacou como um importante fator de risco para complicações cardiovasculares e microvasculares em pacientes diabéticos.

🧠 Os resultados reforçam a importância de incluir a avaliação e o tratamento periodontal no cuidado padrão do paciente com diabetes.
