Chlorhexidine (CHX) toothpaste is a powerful antibacterial agent that helps control plaque and reduce bacteria—especially before and after oral surgery. At 0.12% to 0.2% concentration, it’s an excellent way to protect your mouth from infections.

But there’s a catch! Using CHX toothpaste for more than two weeks can lead to dark tooth discoloration. That’s why we recommend using chlorhexidine mouthwash before and after surgery, rather than prolonged toothpaste use.

Experiencing tenderness after a root canal? It’s completely normal! To manage discomfort, take the pain medication we prescribed, typically an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, or aspirin for the next 3-5 days. If you can’t take those, Tylenol Extra Strength is a good alternative.

For extra relief, try a warm salt water rinse (1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 2-3 times a day for 5 minutes. This can help reduce swelling and discomfort. If pain persists, don’t hesitate to call our office!
