Have you ever wondered where the name “Metairie” came from? It goes back to the area’s early farming history and to Bayou Metairie, which once played an important role in getting people through the surrounding wetlands.

The bayou’s slightly raised banks formed a natural route through the waterlogged backswamps, making them useful as a road. The higher, better-drained soil along the way was also well suited for small farms, gardens, orchards, and dairies. Many of those farms were métairies, the French term for tenant farms where farmers paid the landowner with a share of what they produced.

That connection gave the route the name Chemin de la Metairie, or “road of the tenant farms,” which eventually became Metairie Road. Over time, the name Metairie came to describe the surrounding community as well.

It’s a little piece of local history hiding in a name we say every day.
