Did you know that 1 in 700 children are born with a ? That makes it one of the most common birth defects. With all of the necessary surgeries to correct the condition, more than $100,000 is needed in lifetime medical expenses.
Clefts affect different ethnicities at different rates. Native Americans are more likely than white or African Americans to be born with clefting.
Clefts often present with feeding difficulty, liquids coming out the nose, nasal speaking voice and chronic ear infections.

The cause for most clefts is unknown, but there are both genetic and environmental factors. Cleft lip is caused by failure of fusion of the maxillary prominence with the medial nasal prominence during the 4th-7th week in utero. Cleft palate is caused by failure of fusion of palatine prominences during the 6th to 9th week in utero.
Risk factors for pregnant mothers include smoking, diabetes and taking certain medications during the first trimester.
