Achieving national herd immunity through vaccination may not be possible, said Jefferson Jones, M.D., a medical officer on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID-19 Epidemiology Task Force. The agency's focus will be on reducing numbers of infections and deaths, the Los Angeles Times reported. "We want clean, easy answers, and sometimes they exist. But on this one, we're still learning," said John Brooks, M.D., chief medical officer for the CDC's COVID-19 response. [ADA Newsletter]

Everyone should be getting a letter in the mail that reads...
Dear Patients,
Many years have passed since I began practicing dentistry here in Memphis. I have witnessed the growth of many of you, and children I once treated are now coming in with their own families. It is an extremely satisfying feeling for me to have been a part of so many lives. That is why it is with mixed emotions that I make this announcement that I will be retiring from private practice on December 15th to pursue teaching at the University of Tennessee Dental School.
After interviewing and speaking with several highly qualified dentists interested in acquiring my practice, I have selected Andrew T. Glassell, DDS as my successor. I took the task of finding my replacement very seriously and chose a person I felt would continue in my philosophy of providing the same high level of dental care you and your family have become accustomed to receiving.
Dr. Glassell graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2012 and the University of Tennessee Dental School in 2016. He has several years of experience in all facets of general dentistry. He has my complete confidence both personally and professionally, and once you meet him, I am sure he will have yours as well.
Please help us make Dr. Glassell feel welcome in the practice. Both the staff and I will be working with him to assure a smooth transition. He is looking forward to meeting each and every one of you. Please feel free to contact the office to make an appointment or to speak with any of the staff members with any questions. Dr. Glassell will be moving into my office and will also keep my current staff.
At this time, I would like to express my most sincere appreciation for the many years of patronage and support you have given me. I believe I have served my patients to the best of my abilities and that I have developed warm and lasting friendships with many of you that I will carry with me forever. I wish you and your family good health and happiness.
Sincerely, Robert E. McCalla, DDS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend vaccination against hepatitis B for all Americans under age 60, though the recommendation needs to be approved by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, M.D., before it becomes policy, The Associated Press reported. About 1.9 million Americans have hepatitis B, and though the overall infection rate has been relatively flat, it has been increasing among people in their 40s and 50s, health officials said. A study in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report estimated that global coverage with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, pertussis-containing vaccines, and of polio vaccines dropped from 86% to 83%. The coverage with the first dose of measles-containing vaccines decreased from 86% to 84% from 2019 to 2020, according to HealthDay News. "Action is urgently needed to address immunity gaps caused by pandemic-related disruptions in immunization delivery to prevent vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks in countries with health systems already burdened by COVID-19," the researchers wrote. An analysis of data from 41 studies linked a high intake of alpha linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in seeds, nuts and plant oils, to a 10% lower risk of all-cause mortality, an 8% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and an 11% reduced risk of death from coronary heart disease, compared with lower consumption levels. The study, published in The BMJ, also showed that high intake of ALA {alpha linolenic acid} was associated with a slightly greater risk of death from cancer.

US COVID-19 deaths surpass toll of 1918 flu pandemic
Medscape reported that the COVID-19 death toll has reached 675,000 in the US, surpassing the number of Americans thought to have died during the 1918 influenza pandemic, and COVID-19 deaths are now averaging 2,000 per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The CDC reported that as of Monday, 386.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered in the US, according to Reuters, with 181.7 million fully vaccinated and more than 2.2 million Americans given a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. Data published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report showed 25.3% of COVID-19 cases among Los Angeles County residents age 16 and older, from May through July 25, were breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated people, 3.3% were in those partially vaccinated, and 71.4% were in those who were unvaccinated. Reuters reported that 3.2% of patients with breakthrough cases were hospitalized, compared with 7.5% of those who were not vaccinated, and 0.05% were admitted to an intensive care unit, compared with 1.5% of those who were not vaccinated. [ADA Newsletter]
Takeaway is... without the vaccine you are 2-3 times as likely to be hospitalized and 30 times as likely to wind up in intensive care than if you were vaccinated.
