Wisdom teeth typically make their debut during the late teens and early twenties—which is also an important time to evaluate how they’re developing.

When wisdom teeth need to be removed, having them evaluated and, when appropriate, removed at a younger age can sometimes mean an easier recovery and fewer complications. That’s why we often recommend an early evaluation, even if your wisdom teeth aren’t causing any trouble yet.

Wisdom teeth don't always cause pain—but that doesn't always mean they're healthy.

Many wisdom teeth become impacted or don't have enough room to erupt properly, which can lead to problems such as infection, damage to neighboring teeth, cyst formation, or crowding over time.

Every patient is different, which is why an evaluation by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is so important. With a clinical exam and imaging, we can determine whether your wisdom teeth should simply be monitored or if removal is the best option.

🦷 AOMS FAQ: What does a dry socket feel like?

A dry socket can cause sudden, significant aching pain a few days after a tooth extraction. Other signs may include:

• Pain that isn’t relieved by your usual pain medication
• A foul odor or bad taste
• Pain that may radiate toward the ear, temple, or neck

A dry socket can occur when the blood clot that protects the extraction site is lost too early, exposing the underlying bone and nerves.

What should you do?
If you think you may have a dry socket, call our office to arrange a same-day appointment. Our doctors will evaluate the area and, if appropriate, place a special medicated dressing to help relieve your discomfort. Follow-up appointments may be needed to support uneventful healing.

If you're experiencing increasing or severe pain after an extraction, don't wait — the AOMS team is here to help 🦷
