When a wisdom tooth hasn't come through the gums completely, food and bacteria can become trapped underneath the gum tissue, increasing the risk of an infection called pericoronitis. If the tooth eventually comes through the gums all the way, then only the infection needs to be treated, but if the tooth stays partially under the gums, it may need to be removed to prevent further infection.
