The month of October is most recognized for Halloween costumes and trick-or-treating for candy. So, it shouldn't surprise us that October is the time of the year nationally designated to celebrate the work dental hygienists do. We honor and appreciate the amazing work they do, and we want to help raise awareness for dental health, improving oral health habits, while turning the spotlight to the thousands of dedicated dental hygienists who work hard to clean and take care of our teeth.

Maintaining your teeth’s health can be considered as one of the most important things you do for your body. Having a strong set of teeth not only ensures that you can make good use of your teeth for longer time frame, but also you can be free from any future expensive dental bills. While most of us may think it is difficult to keep the teeth healthy, in reality the fact is that few simple practices and healthy lifestyle can make a huge positive impact on your oral health.

• Consider having a clean diet: One of the first things that you can practice to maintain whiter teeth and overall good oral health is to follow a healthy diet. Avoid or minimize eating and drinking products that stain your teeth such as red wine, coffee etc. Rinsing your mouth after every meal is also a good practice to follow. Apples are considered to be good for teeth and gums since they can increase saliva flow and keep the teeth healthy.

• Practice Proper Brushing Habits: Another highly recommended practice is to change your toothbrush at regular intervals (about once in 3 months.) Try brushing in small circular motion rather than back and forth motion. It is highly recommended to change toothbrush after you have recovered from the flu because you may be transferring bacteria back into your mouth if you continue to use the same brush.

• Clean your tongue: One of the important parts of your mouth that many people tend to forget to clean is your tongue. One of the important things to remember is that bacteria and plaque start building up in your tongue as well which can contribute to bad breath and other oral problems. Make sure to clean your tongue using a tongue scrapper every morning after you wake-up.

You may not know this, but having a healthy mouth helps the rest of your body stay healthy, too. A look inside your mouth, or a swab of saliva can tell your doctor a lot more than you realize about what’s going on in your body. Our mouths are sometimes called “the window” looking into the rest of our bodies.

Our integrative, functional approach is to look beyond the teeth and identify how your oral health can impact your total health and systemic health impact on oral health. Did you know the bacteria associated with gum disease can drastically increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and many other serious systemic diseases?
We are an OraVital® Certified Dental Office in McHenry, IL:

What Motivates You?
I have found over the years in practicing dentistry that there are basically two motivational directions that cause patients to seek help at our dental office. On the surface, they may seem the same but are really very different.

For some it is moving away from disease, for others it is moving toward health. There is no right or wrong answer here. I happily see both in our practice. It is helpful for me to understand the patient’s perspective so that I can best present the treatment that is most in touch with the wants and desires that the patient has.

The patient oriented toward movement away from disease tends to be more reactive. “Oh, I have a cavity? Let’s fix it” or “I don’t like that my gums bleed,” “I cracked my tooth and now it hurts.” It is the knowledge that something is wrong, and they want that issue addressed is the prime motivation. Once the fire is out this patient is content with where he or she is. This tends to be a more reactive, single tooth or episodic care treatment approach.

The patient that is motivated toward health looks at the bigger picture. “What can I do to ensure that my mouth will be comfortable, with minimal risk of future breakdown.” “Is there something I can do now so my teeth don’t become worn, gums stay healthy and will need minimal to less dentistry as I age?” This orientation requires a broader view of the teeth, gums, joints (TMJ) and muscles that control the joints and interaction of the teeth when chewing. My knowing that a patient’s orientation is toward wellness helps to create treatment options that are congruent with their beliefs.

So, when my patients hear me ask questions about their motivational direction, there is a reason for it. The better I can understand my patients, the better my dental practice can serve them. I will always give my patients their options for addressing their concerns. In the end, it is about finding the right solution for my patients. One size doesn’t fit all.

There is a connection between children’s oral health and their overall performance in school. Regular visits to the dentist can help detect potential problems before they start affecting your child’s attendance and grades.

Numerous studies demonstrate the serious impact of poor oral health on academic performance. Research shows that students with toothaches are nearly four times more likely to maintain a low grade-point average. Only regular dental care and oral health education can help students avoid the systemic disease and compromised quality of life that dental disease creates.

ILLINOIS SCHOOLS MANDATORY DENTAL EXAMS
Taking your children to the dentist has always been an important priority. But did you know that it’s also a law for Illinois residents? It’s true, the Illinois State Board of Education has mandated dental exams (Illinois Law: Child Health Examination Code, 77 Ill. Adm. Code 665) for kindergarten, second, sixth, and ninth grades, to ensure that students receive adequate oral health care. The dental examination must have taken place within 18 months prior to May 15 of the school year. A licenses dentist must complete the examination, sign, and date a Proof of School Dental Examination Form. At my McHenry, IL dental practice, we will gladly assist in ensuring you get the proper dental examination to meet the states Proof of School Dental Examination requirement.

Every parent wants the best for their child. When your child has a toothache or is due for a dental checkup, you want them to get the professional care they need to stay healthy. But with the rising cost of dental insurance, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for families to find affordable pediatric dental care.

THE COST OF FAMILY DENTAL INSURANCE PLANS
The problem with many family dental insurance plans today is that they are extremely limited in terms of their coverage and benefits. Many fail to cover the cost of common dental procedures and require the family to pay a large out-of-pocket sum. Furthermore, providers that participate in PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans are often over-burdened with the number of patients they receive and try to rush them in and out of appointments. Often, families who visit these providers fail to get the proper care and attention they need.

ALTERNATIVES TO DENTAL INSURANCE AT JAMES A. HASKEN, DDS in MCHENRY, IL
The good news is, there are ways to obtain low-cost dental care for your child even if you don’t have insurance. An example is the Health-Focused Preventative Plan offered at my dental practice. My dental practice in McHenry, Illinois is built on the foundation of Health-Focused Dentistry, in fact I have it inscribed as part of my company logo. I have always felt we are of better service to our patients if we can provide the information to help you make the best possible decisions for your long-term health. Along with that, the decisions you make have to be consistent with the level of quality and cost that you value. Being health-focused means that I provide you with the information and coaching to help you along the way toward whatever goal you have for your oral health. Once you and I have identified that goal, we can focus our efforts toward reaching that level of health that you have chosen for yourself. My integrative, functional approach to Dentistry is to look beyond the teeth and identify how your oral health can impact your total health and systemic health impact on oral health.

Recently, one of my colleagues shared his opinion about dental insurance and it directly aligns with my thinking, so I wanted to share it. I feel it is important to help educate the public about how to think about and consider dental insurance. Whether you have dental insurance or not, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor as to care for your oral health or not.

Here's the article; credited to: Paul A. Henny, DDS – Roanoke, Virginia:

What precisely are dental insurance companies selling, and do their customers understand what it is? In the vast majority of cases, dental insurance is little more than a set of false assumptions cleverly promoted:

False Assumption #1: Dental insurance is associated with health promotion, when in fact it’s actually associated with minimal cost of repair promotion.

False Assumption #2: Dental insurance saves people money, when in fact it often promotes focusing on issues-of-the-day and addressing them as inexpensively as possible, along with no reflection on how the approach might negatively influence their long-term health, as a short-term only focus may very well cost the patient significantly more money in the long-run.

False Assumption #3: Only people who have dental insurance can afford dental care, when in actuality many patients are “code mined,” and “up-sold” by practices which have agreed to an insurance company fee structure which is out of alignment with their true operating costs.

And all of this is made possible through propaganda machines that over 90% of the profession supports.

Let’s suppose your employer offered you a car insurance policy that is similar to dental insurance, and it “covers” everything from oil changes to body work and engine repair. It also allows access (with their prior approval of course) to $1500.00 per year in services, but beyond that - you’d financially be on your own.

Now, let’s say that on your way to work, a person pulls out in front of you and significantly damages your recently purchased car. The repair bill comes to $4500.00, and after appraisal, the insurance company wants to tell you what parts will be used as well as where the repairs must be done - a place you’ve never heard of before.

What would you do? Would you repair only $1500.00 per year and then finish the work over a three-year period? And what additional problems might occur over that extended repair time? How might the long-term value of your car be influenced by this approach, and who is responsible for the long-term outcome?

Would you consider this policy to be true “insurance’ or something else?

As a profession, we need to find ways to turn away from similar arrangements, as they can easily turn into lose-lose-win. Health-centered, relationship-based dentistry represents an alternative approach. But it requires a very different philosophy toward helping people with their problems; one that insurance companies will try to undermine at every turn yet represents the only professional future.

06/01/2022

Hello, my name is Dr. James Hasken, DDS and I practice holistic, health-focused dentistry. Today I’d like to talk about why I’ve chosen to focus my dental practice in McHenry on minimally invasive, conservative dentistry.

My goal as a dentist is to not only improve my patients’ oral health, but also help them live a better, more fulfilling life. I believe that having good oral health is key for achieving optimal wellness and being able to lead a life that’s free of burdens like chronic pain and disease.

I’ve chosen to practice minimally invasive, conservative dentistry because I believe that it provides my patients with better, longer-lasting results, which adds to their happiness and quality of life.

My philosophy is deeply grounded in the principles of BioRejuvenation Dentistry, which focuses on less invasive techniques and customized treatment. Everyone is different and has different goals for their dental health. With this approach, comparative studies of your teeth and jaw position and extensive scientific research are used as the foundation for developing an individualized treatment plan that gets you back on track with your health and wellness goals.

BioRejuvenation Dentistry: A Minimally Invasive Approach:
The goal of BioRejuvenation Dentistry is to replicate the natural biology of the dental system and its pristine condition before disease and/or damage occurred. It prioritizes the preservation of the dental elements through minimally invasive, conservative techniques. Sometimes, it’s referred to as “Age Reversing Dentistry” because it essentially undoes the damage and wear on your teeth caused by the passage of time.

Bio Rejuvenation Dentistry is used to address a wide range of dental concerns, including chips, cracks, and other signs of wear, tooth discoloration, crowding of teeth, and dental discomfort. When you visit my office for your appointment, the first thing that we’ll do is talk about your unique concerns and what you hope to achieve with treatment. Then, I’ll perform an examination and assessment of your oral health. Based on my findings, I’ll share some different options for your treatment plan.

Ultimately, the goal with BioRejuvenation Dental treatment is to restore your tooth length and lip support, improve functionality, and enhance your comfort and self-confidence. When this method is utilized to its full potential, the damage, discoloration, and staining often seen with aging can be reversed and a strong foundation can be built that prevents these issues from returning in the future. Both aesthetics and functionality are restored, allowing you not only to look better, but feel better too. This is because when teeth have the correct shape and function, jaw muscles and joints are more comfortable, allowing you to feel like your best self.

Using Biological Science as the Foundation for Treatment:
At the core of BioRejuvenation Dentistry is a deep respect for science. It intensely focuses on biological science, scientifically-backed data, and the most up-to-date research. This form of dentistry aims to replicate the natural biology of your dental system. Conservative, minimally invasive techniques are used to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible.

BioRejuvenation Dentistry is a newer model that is different from antiquated methods of the past which focus only on disease management. It focuses on addressing the underlying issues that lead to disease, damage, and dysfunction, not just the symptoms.
The goal of this method is to improve the jaw’s stability, alleviate painful spasming, and relax the chewing muscles, which all work to keep the teeth from becoming damaged.

This process helps patients reach a place of optimal oral health in which:
● The jaw joints are stable
● Muscles are relaxed
● Teeth are not worn down

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Dentistry:
Dental patients who pursue minimally invasive BioRejuvenation Dentistry enjoy a range of health benefits such as:

● A more aesthetic smile and youthful look
● Improved comfort and functionality
● Healthy, beautiful-looking natural teeth
● Better, longer-lasting results

BioRejuvenation Dentistry Treatment Model:
BioRejuvenation Dentistry is unique because it is holistic by nature. By restoring the health and functionality of the dental system, the patient’s overall health and quality of life improves.

We approach this type of care as part of the overall pyramid of building blocks to levels of health. First, we take care of anything that needs immediate attention. This means putting out any fires in the gums, bones, and teeth. If these elements are not healthy, it’s very unlikely that any other treatment will succeed. You can think of these elements like the foundation of a house. If the foundation isn’t solid, the house will come crashing down.

Once the most serious fires are put out, we then focus on the next tier of issues. This includes any existing dental decay (cavities), structural weakness, and biomechanical risks. I assess the bite, jaw joints, and related muscles. Going back to our metaphor, these are like the core systems of the house (electrical, plumbing, etc.). If they are not functioning well together, stress in the system will lead to deterioration elsewhere. In terms of your dental health, you may start to experience symptoms like sore muscles, joint pain, cracked teeth, or bone loss.

Next, we undo the damage caused by the fire. This is the rejuvenation portion of the process. Restorative procedures are used to rejuvenate the health, functionality, and appearance of the teeth. When this is done, the whole system becomes more predictable and comfortable long term. A smoothly functioning system looks and feels great. Thinking back to the house metaphor - can you imagine what the house would look like if nothing was ever updated, repaired, or maintained?! You need all systems to work well for the whole house to be in good shape and look its best!

The final step is to keep the fires from returning. We build on the earlier pieces by providing you with ongoing dental health coaching and care. This includes taking steps to make sure that nutrition and homecare are at optimal levels. When these steps are followed, your teeth and gums continue to stay healthy and maintain a pleasant aesthetic. In the end, less dentistry is needed, which means you spend less time in a dental chair and more time doing the things you love! What’s more, the cost of care over the years is substantially lower and you experience fewer disruptions to your life because of dental emergencies. When BioRejuvenation Dentistry is used and patients become more involved in their own health, their quality of life improves dramatically.

04/11/2022

Periodontitis is overlooked and ignored all too often. When periodontitis goes untreated, the consequences are devastating. It wages war on the human body, starting first with tissue damage and receding gums then progressing to bone damage and tooth loss. Eventually, it can cause systemic health issues such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and many other serious, painful, and even life-threatening conditions. According to the Centers for disease Control and Prevention, 47% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of this terrible health affliction.

But what do you do when you start to notice signs of gum disease like bleeding when brushing your teeth or red, swollen gums, but you can’t afford treatment? Whether you’ve hit a financial rough spot or you can’t afford the rising cost of dental insurance, it’s stressful knowing that you need dental care but can’t afford it. my goal is to provide quality dental care that is affordable for everyone.

In an effort to encourage good dental health and alleviate the rising cost of insurance, I developed an in-house Health-Focused Preventive Dental Savings Plan. My plan includes preventive dental care and a reduced fee on all services performed at my office. For more information about the plan: https://www.drhasken.com/health-focused-preventive-plan/

What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a serious oral health affliction that affects the structures which hold the teeth intact, keep them in place, and allow them to do their job. The gums, ligaments, and bones that hold the teeth in their proper position become infected and inflamed. Plaque and bacteria build up on the teeth and harden into tartar. Plaque irritates the gum tissue and can cause gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis.

We Provide Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy:
The goal of non-surgical periodontal therapy is to control the infection and reduce the level of harmful bacteria present. This is usually accomplished through scaling and root planing, otherwise known as “deep cleaning.” Using specialized instruments, we remove plaque and tartar that have latched onto the teeth, built up over time, and as a result are cemented above and below the gumline.

Healthy Mouth – Healthy Body:
Evidence continues to mount that connects what happens in your mouth with what happens in your body. The mouth is the window to the body and what we see in your mouth gives significant clues about what is going on in your body.

One of the most influential methods that we have at our disposal for treating gum disease is bacterial Oral DNA testing to identify the specific bacteria that are known to be more aggressive in causing gum disease, tooth decay and contribute to systemic diseases such as heart disease.

This simple test, when combined with a risk analysis of your teeth, gums, bones, muscles and jaw joints, will provide a complete picture of the health of your mouth. As a result of this inclusive approach, we are able to identify risk factors and make positive changes to help you live a longer, healthier life.

We are an OraVital® Certified Dental Office in McHenry, IL:
The testing we use is the OraVital® test. Our dental office has been certified to dispense the OraVital® System, a powerful diagnostic and treatment protocol for oral infections including gingivitis (sensitive or bleeding gums), periodontitis (gum disease,) and halitosis (chronic bad breath.)

The Oravital® System is a scientifically proven, safe, easy, non-invasive, and highly effective protocol in treating oral infections. The Oravital® System fights and controls harmful bacteria, restoring your mouth to a healthy state. The OraVital® System is the most comprehensive solution for the detection & treatment of the oral pathogens.

The OraVital® System is a five-step protocol based on identifying the cause of oral infection through microbial analysis and tests for bleeding gums before scaling. The five steps are: (1) Screening, (2) Treatment, (3) Evaluation, (4) Maintenance, (5) Reevaluation. The test is easy to perform by swabbing various areas of your mouth. These samples are sent out for analysis of the bacteria present. When the report comes back to us, we sit down with you and review the results.

For more information about our OraVital® System protocol: https://www.drhasken.com/health-focused-dentistry/periodontal_care/

Advanced Periodontal Disease:
We are able to treat most cases of gum disease. But in some instances, when the disease is particularly severe or aggressive, the care of a specialist, or periodontist, may be advised. In this case, we can refer you to one of our trusted partners. We will work closely with them to make sure that you get the care and treatment you need.

Affording Periodontal Care:
We hope that, by now, we have made it clear that periodontal disease is a serious issue that should not be left untreated. If you find yourself in a position where you are concerned about your dental health but are unable to afford treatment, do not be discouraged. There are many financial options out there that are worth exploring.

Can Dental Insurance Help?
We get a lot of questions about dental insurance at our office, especially when it comes to periodontal treatment. Unfortunately, the way the most dental insurance is designed today is to provide a “cookie-cutter” approach to coverage. Neither the patient’s current dental health or history is considered. The state of dental insurance has changed dramatically over the years. The cost of dental procedures has increased but the scope of coverage, on the other hand, has shrunken. In other words, dental insurance may, depending on the plan, offset some of the costs, but may not cover the entire procedure.

Some dentists participate in PPO plans (Preferred Provider Organization) and charge a reduced fee for patients who are covered by these plans. However, in order to make up for the loss in revenue, these dentists often see a larger number of patients and therefore spend less time on each visit. In these situations, patients are rushed in and out the door and often do not get the proper care or attention they need to stay healthy.

We believe that every patient deserves quality dental care. This is true regardless of whether they have insurance or not. Unlike many other providers, we do not rush patients in and out the door. We will take the time to understand your goals and concerns and give you the chance to ask any questions that you may have. We want you to feel that you can trust us and that you are being taken care of and given the attention and compassionate understanding that you deserve. We will develop a truly customized treatment plan that aligns with your needs.

Get the Affordable Dental Care You Need:
My team and I are committed to helping you get the affordable dental care you need. If you have questions about periodontal treatment or gum disease or would like to learn more about our Health-Focused Preventive Plan, please contact our office at (815) 385-0777. We will be happy to discuss your concerns in detail or help you schedule an appointment.

Oral DNA Testing is the Link Between Life-Saving Medical Prevention and Dental Care.

At my practice, our philosophy of Integrative Dental Medicine is about identifying how the BODY, BREATHING, BACTERIA and BITE effects total health. This puts the patient at the center with a focus on prevention, fostering the development of healthy behaviors and skills for effective self-control and care that can be used for a lifetime to attain optimum health. This focus is on developing health and maintaining a preventive focus rather that reacting to disease. The result can be a more predictable outcome.

Our integrative, functional approach is to look beyond the teeth and identify how your oral health can impact your total health and systemic health impact on oral health. Did you know the bacteria associated with gum disease can drastically increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and many other serious systemic diseases?

A Healthy Mouth For A Healthy Body:
Oral infections, even when relatively mild, can affect the health of the whole body. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and create an immune response elsewhere in the body, elevating the risk of many serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and pregnancy complications.

Many times, there are indications for some specific antibiotic rinses and creams, antimicrobial rinses with some specific techniques we will help you master. After a period of usually four to six weeks we have the patient return to measure the progress and discuss next steps. We have seen some amazing results with cases that were slow to improve using conventional methods alone. This is an important tool because it helps reduce systemic risks from bacteria as well.

Research has taught us that inflammation is a key component in many chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, strokes and diabetes. We can help provide strategies to help reduce systemic inflammation in your body through key oral hygiene techniques, diet, bacterial and Oral DNA testing and analysis when indicated.
