Q: Why won’t my denture stay securely in my mouth?
A: Great denture making is a craft, not a commodity. Most people who are unhappy with their dentures can achieve satisfaction when they find the right dentist with experience and an attention to the details. Dental implants are often incorporated into dentures these days so that they clip into the mouth and feel secure in ways that were never achievable before.

Q: If I have gum disease why don’t my gums hurt?
A: Most diseases of the body don’t hurt until the advanced stages, whether it’s cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, or even cancer. Waiting until pain sets in limits our options to manage gum disease properly. The best outcomes are achieved when gum disease is identified early and intervention steps are taken to arrest it so the disease does not progress into its advanced stages.

Q: Everyone in my family has bad teeth. Is that why I am getting cavities?
A: Genetic factors have been identified that are know to cause gum disease, and we can test your saliva to find out if you are high risk for that disease. But no such test has been identified to determine whether cavities are caused by your family genes. My experience is that your eating habits and personal home care are far more influential. Q: Is getting a dental implant painful?
A: Most patients who receive dental implants are surprised at how smooth the surgery goes and how little post-operative pain they experience afterward. Of course, this can depend upon the scenario: receiving one dental implant at a visit is different that receiving six. But implant placement is a precision procedure that is almost always managed with just over-the-counter pain reliever afterward.

Q: What's your opinion on going to Mexico for affordable dentistry?
A: My observation is that those who receive dental treatment in Mexico lack the ability to discern the quality they are receiving. I see some dentistry that is good quality, and some that would result in a lawsuit if it were done here in the states. Both usually believe they got great treatment at a bargain. When patients don’t have an established relationship for follow-up care and problems ensue, they are dissatisfied with the results despite the lower initial cost.

Q: Do I have to get a crown for my broken tooth? Can you just do a filling?
A: Fillings are to fill holes and seal edges, but do nothing to strengthen weak teeth. Crowns are shells that cover teeth like a protective helmet and are intended to reduce the risk of the tooth breaking. If someone asks for a filling as a lower-cost approach, they should consider it a temporary solution for a broken tooth with the knowledge that it will likely require a crown in the future.
