We love sugary summer treats like ice cream and popsicles, but sugar feeds the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. How can you enjoy your summer favorites and avoid the negative effects of sugar on your teeth?
🍦Rinse your mouth with water after eating a sugary treat.
🍦Chew sugar-free gum (preferably with xylitol, which is known to help prevent cavities).
🍦Wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth after you eat your frozen treat - this will allow your saliva to neutralize the acid in your mouth and make your enamel less vulnerable to wear.

As you sip away on your favorite summer drink, it's good to be aware of a few important facts:
🍋Try to avoid drinks that are high in sugar and/or acid. Sugar feeds harmful, cavity-causing bacteria, and acid wears away at tooth enamel. The combination of both sugar and acid in some drinks can be especially harmful to your teeth.
🍋If you decide to treat yourself with a summer drink like lemonade (one that's both sugary and acidic), it's best to avoid sipping altogether. When you sip these drinks, you're repeatedly bathing your mouth in sugar and acid.

As we wrap up our spring cleaning reminders, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the importance of a good dental hygienist when it comes to maintaining proper dental hygiene.

Dental hygienists are highly trained professionals who do the hard work of performing all of our routine cleanings as well as providing our patients with expert advice for their own oral hygiene routines. They're also experts in gum health and provide special gum infection therapies for patients dealing with gum disease.

🟨Electric toothbrushes are able to do the hard work of tiny, repetitive motions for you.
🟨Most electric toothbrushes are designed to give you feedback in real time, helping you brush for the proper amount of time using the right amount of pressure.

When you're brushing with the proper technique, a manual toothbrush can do an excellent job. But an electric toothbrush can do most of the work for you!

Are you cleaning your tongue every day? People often neglect this step in their oral hygiene routine, but it's as simple as gently brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper after brushing your teeth and it makes a big difference!
