Important Notice Regarding Antibiotic Premedication

We hope this message finds you well. In accordance with the current guidelines provided by the American Dental Association (ADA), we are updating our policy regarding patients who require antibiotic premedication prior to dental treatment.

If your physician told you to take a premedication (such as antibiotics) before dental procedures due to a heart condition, joint replacement, or other medical concern, you need to take the antibiotic one hour prior to your appointment.

If you need a new prescription, we can call it into your pharmacy. We will also print one out for you to take home on your next visit. If
you forget to take your antibiotic, we can give it to you when you arrive, but there will be a $20 charge.

Your health and safety remain our highest priority, and we appreciate your cooperation in these updated guidelines.

Why does my dentist need to know what medications I take? Our take, in short….

Medications affect the body many ways. Dentally speaking, some medication can cause dry mouth, bleeding gums or bruxism. But they also interact with anesthetic or sedation medicines we administer. If you need dental work, surgery, or sedation, it’s very important to know what medications a patient is taking. This helps prevent harmful drug interactions. Some drugs have synergistic effects. This means a patient taking a drug may have similar effects of something we administer resulting in toxicity. Some drugs can alter the distribution, absorption, or metabolism of other drugs we may administer. Even antibiotics can affect normal gut flora, which in turns, decreases vitamin K which is important on blood clotting. So having an accurate medication list IS very important!

There have been a lot of changes at Trailside Dental! However, here is a familiar face! Chelsie is our Expanded Function Dental Assistant who has taken on the role of Office Manager! She is working hard to keep the business side running smoothly, but still manages to help patients chairside if needed! So, you will see her friendly face when you come in the door, but you may still see her taking great care of the patients in the operatories! Chelsie does it all!
