Epic human at an epic restaurant. My dad is 91 and we spent the morning together for several doctor appointments (that's why there's a crooked smile-LOL. He missed breakfast, so we stopped at Angelos in Ann Arbor. Dad is my hero-has taught me so much over the years and has helped me be the person I am.
At the same time, dad has Alzheimers. Thankfully he still recognizes me, but he has trouble figuring out how to use a seatbelt and must have asked me 10 times today where we were going.
AND, he has a CPAP, but doesn't wear it.
Did you know Alzheimers is related to untreated sleep apnea?
Did you know I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2006 or so, but I'm fairly certain I've been living with it since early childhood. Had tonsils and adenoids out at an early age. Still snored, but noone realized it wasn't "cute". I compensated by being in great shape, but I've never had the stamina I saw in other kids.
The family history and the long time diagnosis has driven me to know more about this dread disease and I believe Dentists and Orthodontists are ideally positioned to identify possible sufferers, provided they know what to look for.
In fact, orthodontic treatment, properly done can improve (not always cure) sleep apnea and sleep apnea symptoms. If you want to know more about how YOU might help, please contact me for a copy of the summary article I wrote (send me your email and text number) or set up a meeting to talk about possibilities at www.calendly.com/eggheadortho or www.sleepapnearetreat.com .
Knowing what I now know, I've lost almost 100 pounds, I've completely changed my diet and exercise plan and I'm adding new elements every week.
Don't let your loved ones suffer. Don't let your patients suffer. We have the possibility for not only reducing the long-term effects, but reducing the day to day degradation in quality of life for those with OSA.
It all starts with knowledge.
