βOrthodontic braces help align teeth and create a confident smile, but they also demand extra attention to oral hygiene. Brackets and wires create tiny spaces where food particles and plaque can easily accumulate, making daily cleaning more challenging than usual. Without proper brushing and flossing, these trapped particles can gradually affect tooth enamel and gum health during the treatment period.
One of the earliest signs of poor hygiene with braces is the appearance of chalky white spots around the brackets. These spots indicate enamel decalcification, meaning minerals have been lost from the tooth surface. Plaque build-up can also lead to cavities in hard-to-clean areas and cause gum inflammation that may interfere with orthodontic progress.
Maintaining strong oral habits is essential. Brushing carefully after meals with an orthodontic or electric toothbrush, using floss designed for braces, and scheduling regular professional cleanings help protect teeth throughout treatment. With consistent care, braces can lead to the healthy, straight smile they are meant to create.β
