Dr. Lewin must have found the 25th hour in the day, between running a practice, raising a little person, some light historical costuming, and somehow finding the time to get the 500 hours of CE and exam passage for her Fellowship in the AGD. Congratulations Rachel!

Before and After:
We helped this patient get ready for the holiday season by replacing their old and leaking crowns on their upper front teeth. They wanted a more natural look for their smile and while this is just a quickly whipped up so that I can post our special offer, we’ll probably revisit this case in another B&A post once everything is all healed up!

Before & After: Implant Bridge #23-26
This Before & After is part of a full-mouth oncological caries management case that is still in progress. My .us Rep and I worked together to get some parts for this case donated so that I could do this patient’s work at cost for them, as they’ve been fighting an uphill cancer battle for many many years now and struggle with the rapid caries progression, severe dry mouth, and delayed healing issues that so many of our cancer patients frequently face.
In addition to their current chemo, they had a history of bisphosphonate use, further decreasing healing and increasing the risk of complications!

These teeth were extracted nearly two years before this photo was taken, and one of these implants failed and was explanted, grafted, and allowed to heal before being re-placed. Healing was incredibly slow, with exposed bone for several months after both surgeries.
But we persevered! My surgeon was ultimately able to give the second implant the all-clear to restore and I was finally able to deliver front teeth to a supremely deserving individual who had gone without lower front teeth for roughly 18 months!

This case is far from ideal, and I elected to keep these pontics quite high off the gingiva so that the patient could keep the abutments and implants as clean as possible for happy and healthy tissue and successful implants into the future.

While this case is not a showstopper, it is near and dear to my heart. Ultimately, the patient was absolutely ecstatic to have their lower front teeth back and is now enjoying corn ON the cob and many other foods that require biting with front teeth. Their smile is completely transformed, as well 🥰.

Another incredible weekend is in the books with the Council on Communications!

This is the second year Dr. .l.lewin is serving on the council of her four year term. She travels to ADA headquarters in Chicago at least twice each year to meet with her fellow council members and leadership in-person. There’s also some levity thrown in there, too (everyone needs a break for some fun after the hard work we put in all day during our meetings).

Active participation as a volunteer leader at the local, state, and national level means that your dentist is advocating for her profession and her patients throughout the year in many different modalities!

Remember: if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.

Happy Pride Month!
Beyond Dentistry has always and will always be a safe space for our LGBTQIA+ community.
And if that means we lose some haters, so be it. This world is chaos, and kindness is free.

Did you know that Dr. .l.lewin serves at the National Level as the Council on Communications representative to the Diversity & Inclusion Committee?
She is doing what she can to support a more inclusive national association for its members and for the patients with whose care we are entrusted.

This patient had her veneers for nearly 15 years but was starting to get decay underneath them and was unhappy with how “masculine” they looked to her (top photo).

After a careful consultation, Dr. .l.lewin sketched out some changes she thought might make the patient feel happier and more confident with her smile and they proceeded to have the lab (.dandy) make a diagnostic waxup and fabricated temporary crowns which the patient took for a “test drive” for about 6 weeks to ensure she was completely satisfied with the shape and size (middle photo).

We recently proceeded to deliver her definitive crowns (bottom photo is of try-in as the patient’s gums need a few days to calm down post-cementation, as expected) and the patient was thrilled with their results!

Trick or Treat? This one’s a trick!

Happy Halloween, from the Tooth Fairy and her favorite Tooth!!

Remember kids (and parents): eat ALL THE HALLOWEEN CANDY YOU WANT TONIGHT!
But do it all at once, so it’s healthier for your teeth.

Repeated exposures to the sugar and acid in most Halloween candy as you snack your way to an empty jack-o-lantern tote is much worse for your teeth than a single exposure.

If you are going to be snacking on it for the next few months, like Dr. Lewin tends to do, try to pair your candy consumption with meals, swish your mouth with water after eating, and remember to wait 20 minutes before (or after) brushing your teeth to eat or drink anything except water so that your saliva can rebalance the pH of your mouth to help protect your pearly whites!
