Those old silver fillings contain more than silver. Dental amalgam contains mercury, and the FDA recommends that certain higher-risk groups consider alternatives when appropriate, including pregnant women, young children, and people with kidney dysfunction or certain sensitivities.

But that doesn't mean you should rush to remove every existing filling. Removing a filling that's still in good condition can increase exposure to mercury v***r, so removal should be discussed with a qualified dental professional. Should you save a damaged tooth or have it removed?
