My hygienist, Kara, is so good at her job that patients here look forward to getting their teeth cleaned.

She graduated at the top of her class, and she's the most meticulous hygienist I've ever worked with. She holds herself to an impossibly high standard. What you feel in the chair, though, is how gentle and kind she is, and how much she wants to get you healthy.

She's also wonderful at explaining what's going on in your mouth in a way that makes sense, so you leave understanding your own gums better than when you came in. I have patients here in Manchester who book an extra cleaning a year simply because they enjoy their time with her that much.

I've been practicing dentistry for quite a few years, and I'm still really passionate about what I do. Even better, I truly believe that I'm doing the best work of my life right now.

When people ask me what they should look for in a dentist, I say, “What you want is someone with enough years behind them to have seen nearly everything, who still loves the work enough to keep getting better at it.”

That's exactly where I am. I don't need to work at this point in my life. I do it because I love it.

I still take courses, still learn new techniques, still get excited about a complicated case. One of my mentors is an oral surgeon in his seventies who's still going strong, and that's who I want to be. As long as I can do this at a high level and keep growing, I'm not going anywhere.
