A patient of mine developed a raging toothache and a swollen abscess while she was out of state in North Carolina. She could have found a dentist down there, but instead, she got on a plane and flew to Manchester to see me.

If you've been avoiding the dentist partly because you remember that horrible tray of goop they used to shove in your mouth for impressions, please know that those days are done.

When we know you're coming in nervous — and we usually know from the phone call — the team member who brings you back spends real time with you before I ever show up. While they're getting your scans and x-rays, they're also talking with you. Finding out what happened, why you're afraid, what you need from us.

Then they come find me and fill me in. Not just about your teeth — about you. Whether you're actually doing okay or hanging on by a thread. Whether you need someone upbeat and joking around, or someone who's going to come in quietly and keep things calm.

If you're cracking jokes and doing great, I'll match that energy. Kim hadn't been to the dentist in a long time.

The spaces between them are getting wider. Things look different when you smile than they did a year ago. You can feel that something is loose, or that your bite doesn't come together the way it used to. Maybe there's a bridge that you're terrified is going to come out at the worst possible moment.

When gum disease progresses, the bone that holds your teeth in place slowly breaks down. Your teeth lose their support, they start to splay forward, and what used to feel solid starts to feel unreliable. You might not be in pain. You might not have any visible swelling. But that feeling of "something isn't right"? Trust it.
