FYI: Most patients do not understand their insurance coverage and get stuck with large sums to pay. (in addition to paying insurance premiums)
If you are looking for dental insurance, here's a few tips to help.

When signing up for your dental policy, always ask these questions.
1. What is my Yearly Maximum?
2. How much is deductible?
3. Which procedures apply to deductible?
4. How many prophys (cleanings) are allowed a year?
5. Do my benefits run on a calendar year or benefit year?
6. Do I have basic and major services?
7. Is there a waiting period for basic or major services?
8. Is there a limit on basic or major services?
9. Does insurance downgrade Posterior composites (white fillings on back teeth) to Amalgam fillings (silver fillings) leaving patient with larger balance
10. Is my dentist a participating provider?
11. Is there a missing tooth clause? (insurance clause that will not pay for a missing tooth or teeth prior to coverage.
12. Is there a roll over amount? (insurance money not used that rolls over to following year.) What's the amount?
13. Do I have out of network benefits?
Out of network benefits allow you to see the dentist of your choice.
However, your out of pocket expense might be higher.

Insurance seems to control our lives telling us what we can do, when we can do it and with which doctor we can see.(And you're paying them! After your premiums, deductibles and co pays, and denied claims, you need to know all you can to save yourself.

Choosing The Right Insurance.
Ask these questions.
What % does it cover? Preventive? Basic? Major?
Is there a waiting period?
What is the deductible?
Does the deductible apply to all catagories such as Preventitive, Basic and Major?
Is there a missing tooth clause? (A tooth previously missing before you start your coverage. Will insurance replace with partial, bridge or implant?)
Do I have out of network benefits or do I have to go to in network dentist only?
How many times a year can I have my teeth cleaned.
Do I have to wait 6 month interval between cleanings?
What's my deductible?
What is my co pay.
What is the calendar year max?
Is there a roll over from one year to the next? How much is it?
Do my benefits run from date issued or calendar year?

If you have any questions about your insurance, call the number on the back of your card before your dental appointment. Be prepared and know your benefits. Otherwise, you may be charged a higher amount.
