The rumors are true. It’s the earliest spring of your life. Spring, marked by the vernal equinox, will begin on March 19, 2020 in all US time zones. Spring is earlier than it has been in 124 years (since 1896). The word equinox is derived from two Latin words—aequus (equal) and nox (night).
The equinox is famously the time of balance, with theoretically 12 hours of sunshine and 12 hours of non-Sun. Equinoxes are the only two times a year that the Sun rises due east and sets due west for all of us on Earth!
