Gum Disease Associated with Higher Risk of Colorectal Cancer. A study in Dentistry Journal indicates that periodontal disease not only affects the mouth, but may also increase the risk of colorectal cancer. The researchers noted that "maintaining good oral health is not merely an esthetic or functional concern, but an essential component of cancer prevention.”While the study shows associations rather than causality, researchers are now further investigating the “oral-gut axis.” The periodontists at Dental Implant & Periodontal Specialists in Madison are accepting new patients.

Scientists are working on a new toothpaste that helps fight gum disease without destroying the mouth’s helpful bacteria, according to Science Daily. It is anticipated that this toothpaste will block only the harmful bacteria that drive periodontitis, allowing beneficial bacteria to remain unaffected. Maintaining excellent oral health requires daily brushing, flossing, as well s seeing your dentist and periodontist as directed. Link Between Gum Disease and Breast Cancer. According to Science Daily, researchers at Johns-Hopkins have found that “a bacterium commonly associated with gum disease may help initiate breast cancer, accelerate tumor growth, and promote its spread by damaging DNA and changing how cancer cells behave.” More research is needed to confirm these findings and develop clinical protocols. The periodontists at Dental Implant & Periodontal Specialists in Madison are dedicated to improving your oral and overall health.

Link Between Leading Cause of Death and Periodontal Disease?

ASCVD (Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease) is the leading cause of death in the U.S. It refers to narrowed arteries caused by plaque buildup. Researchers state there is increasing evidence suggesting an association between periodontal disease and ASCVD. While further studies are needed to investigate causation, this study and many others demonstrate that maintaining good oral health is important to promote good overall health.

Could Eating Red Tomatoes Prevent Red Gums? A new study suggests that not getting enough lycopene—the antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color—may significantly raise the risk of severe gum disease in older adults. Seniors with adequate lycopene intake had only about one-third the risk of severe periodontitis as those with inadequate lycopene in their diets. The study does not suggest that periodontal disease can be prevented simply by ingesting lycopene. Brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist and periodontist as directed are still necessary. However, the study shows the importance of nutritional factors in maintaining good oral and overall health.
