Happy Independence Day!

George Washington kneels and prays in the snow.

This painting always makes me think, especially today, what was he praying for? Was he praying for the same things we pray for today? Freedom? Peace? VIctory?
Likely, he was praying for victory, so that he and his country would be free of the yoke of British tyranny. And, thanks to his will and determination, we still enjoy the gift he and the Founding Fathers gave us.

Thanks to his sacrifice, and the sacrifice of many others, our Independence remains to this day. Today, I am thankful for the men, the giants, upon whose shoulders we stand.

Above are two small pills. One is Oxycodone, from a licensed pharmacy. The the other is a counterfeit pill (containing 5x the lethal dose of fentanyl), obtained from a drug dealer.

Which is which?
Can you tell the difference?
Would you bet your life on your choice?

In my profession, too often I see the consequences of addiction and pill-seeking behavior. Even in the best of circumstances, addiction can cause irreversible damage to your teeth. In worse circumstances, these medications cause death.
A young man in Kansas (a high school student with no drug problems) took one of these pills, and was found dead. And, this is but one example of many, many tragic deaths across our country…of young men and women who were taken too soon.

I cannot stress the importance of educating our young people about the existence and the very real dangers of these counterfeit pills. Never, never accept a drug from anyone, other than your doctor or pharmacist.

Every parent thinks, “That will never happen to my child.” One mistake, one pill…it can happen to literally anyone.

Educate them, talk with them, and be vigilant. Our children are our future.

June 4, 1944, the Allies stormed Normandy Beach, in an effort to break the stranglehold the Axis had on Western Europe, and end the conflict which had raged for 3+ years already.

My grandfather, Lavelle Murphy, was an anti-aircraft gunner, and helped to liberate Berlin in the final days of the war in Europe. It would be more than another year before the end of the war.

I can only imagine the courage, determination, and fortitude it took to be on one of those barges, attacking a beach half a world away.

In the United States, dental health and systemic health are treated as separate. Americans have gotten used to going to the dentist for their dental health, and the physician for their overall health.

As you have probably figured out, your mouth and your teeth, are connected to the rest of you. One impacts the other. Poor dental health can affect your overall health, and poor overall health can negatively impact you dental health. Poor dental health can also affect your mental health, and vice-versa.

Many who have persistent, untreated dental issues will often avoid the company of others, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and other problems. Likewise, many who suffer from mental and anxiety disorders, have difficulty performing daily tasks such as brushing teeth. This can lead to dental health issues, long-term.
