Just a reminder to patients that still need dental treatment this year and want to use their remaining insurance benefits. We have very few appointment openings left so call as soon as possible to get on the schedule. Also, keep in mind, the dental labs that make your crowns, bridges, and dentures will be closed for the upcoming holidays so time is of the essence if you need any major treatment completed before the end of the year. I’ve been doing some research on the toothpaste I mentioned in my “rant” the other day. Their study wasn’t a bad one but the sample size was very small, 33 people. The active ingredient is EDTA, used as an anticoagulant in purple top blood collection tubes among other things. The dramatic results they are promoting are statistically significant but are they truly clinically that dramatic? The best result they got was a 1.1 mm improvement in pocket depth. The mechanism of action is chelation of calcium from dental plaque biofilm which leads to less adhesion to the tooth. Touting this gel as an at home cure for gum disease is premature in my opinion. Diligent home care using the tools that work best for your mouth with professional care and monitoring is still the best way to control oral disease and protect your systemic health in my opinion; although, at some point this gel may prove to be a useful adjunctive product. This product is not really a toothpaste, it is a gel with no fluoride or abrasives. Abrasives in pastes are the polishing agents that make your teeth feel smooth and reduce stains, they vary from heavily to lightly abrasive depending on the product. In reading reviews of the gel, it wasn’t well received by users who objected to the lack of benefits of regular toothpaste and to the taste of the product.

Good morning all. This morning Facebook has decided in their infinite wisdom (dripping with sarcasm) to flood my personal page with ads for mail order dental products. One was a toothpaste supposed to cure periodontal disease that gave no clinical data to back up that claim. The only ingredient they talked about was wintergreen which I consider to be a flavoring agent, the same one in liquid pink antacid. Oh, it’s $19.99 plus shipping over the counter. That just scratches the surface of the offerings presented to me this morning. We will talk more about these things later, rant over, let’s have coffee. Have a great day!

The sudden death of a longtime patient I was lucky to also call friend, has prompted me to make this plea to my current and potential patients who read this. Please take seriously the control of any chronic medical conditions you might have such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, stress and others. Do it for yourself and your loved ones who will be devastated by your loss. Dental health impacts your general health as well as quality of life. We will never know how long we have on this earth; don't wait to start tomorrow, start today. I miss this kind, self-less, beautiful soul and mourn her along with her family.

I have had some questions about that new Water P*k Sonic Fusion. It’s that sonic toothbrush with the Water P*k built into it. I honestly thought it would be messy and icky, but ya’ll I was wrong. It is amazing and not that weird actually; I love the compact brush head too. Just thought I would throw that out there with Black Friday coming....

In this unprecedented year, my staff and I wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving in which we stop to give thanks for all that we do have by the grace of God. We will be closed Wednesday through Sunday to celebrate the holiday and will reopen on Monday morning. Following the recommendations is restricting our ability to see as many patients per day and means that we cannot accept walk-in emergencies at this time.
