Below is a story that serves as a reminder of how gum disease can quietly impact overall health in ways most people never expect.

Anna walked into our office suffering from severe tooth pain. She hadn’t cared for her teeth in years!

We found an infection — gum disease — which often could spread via a person’s bloodstream to major organs, weakening them.

Anna was frustrated, telling me how she got sick easily and was taking frequent sick leave, missing work.

Dear Dr. Zoya,

I reckon I owe you more than just a thank-you, but it’s all I got to give right now, so here it goes.

For years, I figured the ache in my mouth was just part of getting old — something to grit my teeth and bear, you know?

But then there was Lily, my little granddaughter, the light of my days.

She used to climb all over me during visits, giggling like a wild thing, tugging at my mustache —we just having fun.

Until one day, when she saw me for the first time in a few years (my daughter moved away due to her job), she stopped coming close to me.

She darted away when I leaned in for a hug. “Grandpa’s teeth are yucky,” she told her mama, like I couldn’t hear.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror—those crooked, worn-down stumps staring back, dark and jagged like some old fence nobody bothered to fix.

Ugly, unpleasant things they were.

Subsequently each visit, it got worse—I’d try to smile for her, but it’d just send her running away.

I thought I was a "tough guy". But this cut quite deep.

So I swallowed my pride — and my nerves about them shiny dentist tools—and came to you.

You didn’t judge me.

You just listened, then got to work.

These new teeth you gave me, they’re something else.

First time Lily saw ‘em, her eyes went wide. “Grandpa, you look like a movie star!” she said.

I thought to myself, “She is joking.”

She ain’t scared of me no more—we play chase again, and I can’t stop grinning.

Dr. Zoya, you didn’t just fix my teeth.

You patched up something I thought I’d lost forever — hugs from my family.

It is a big lesson I have learned.

Taking care of my health is also love for my family.

As a dentist, I’ve seen smiles transform lives, but none quite like Ann's story.

She’s in her late 70s, a baking and cooking whiz who lights up any room — except when it comes to her smile. “It’s driving me crazy,” she told me.

“I love meeting people, but I hate my smile.”

Her front teeth, ground down and short, made her feel toothless, invisible.
