Yes, your mouth goes through menopause, too.

Dry mouth. More sensitivity. Changes in your gums. Even changes in the way things taste.

There’s something that women aren’t talking about enough: “menopause mouth.”

We talk about hot flashes, sleep changes, skin changes and mood changes during perimenopause and menopause. But changes in your mouth? Not nearly enough.

Hormonal changes can affect oral health, too. In a 2025 survey of women 40+, 40% reported increased dry mouth, while others reported increased tooth sensitivity, changes in taste and increased tooth decay or tooth loss.

And dry mouth isn’t just uncomfortable. Saliva helps protect your teeth from acids and bacteria, so when there’s less of it, your risk for cavities, sensitivity and other oral health problems can increase.

At Deep Roots Dental & Facial Aesthetics, we believe your mouth is part of the bigger picture. Oral health is whole-body health, and changes in your teeth and gums can sometimes tell us something about what’s happening beyond your smile.

Things your dentist knows that you really wish we didn’t. 👀

That tiny thing you’ve been ignoring? It can look VERY different to us than it feels to you.

Because one of the strangest things about your mouth is that something can be going wrong without hurting yet.

But here’s where it gets really interesting…

Your exam and X-rays can reveal clues you can’t see in the mirror and may not be able to feel: changes around and between teeth, changes in the bone supporting them, and other problems that may be developing quietly.

So no, pain isn’t always the first clue.

And yes, your gums can tell on you a little.

But we’re not judging you. We actually want you to tell us everything. How long it’s been weird. What you’ve been avoiding. What changed. What you thought wasn’t worth mentioning.

No pain, no problem? That’s a myth, and Dr. Esther says it’s one worth busting.

Some dental problems can develop quietly. Cavities may not hurt at first. Gum disease can progress with little or no discomfort. Even some infections can exist before you notice obvious symptoms.

Pain isn’t always the first warning sign.

That’s one reason routine dental exams matter. They can reveal changes you may not see, feel or even know are happening, before a small issue has the chance to become a bigger one.

Many dental insurance plans reset at the end of the year, although coverage and reset dates vary by plan. If your plan resets January 1, unused annual benefits may not carry over.

Depending on your coverage, benefits may apply toward cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, crowns, periodontal care or other covered dental treatment.

Check your plan documents or contact your insurance provider to confirm your remaining benefits and any applicable deadlines.
