Your jaw can generate enough force in your sleep to damage your own teeth.

During sleep, many people unknowingly clench or grind their teeth — a condition called bruxism. Unlike normal chewing, this force is uncontrolled and often much stronger.

The masseter muscle — one of the most powerful muscles in the human body — can contract with intense force, reaching up to 80 kg or more during sleep in some individuals.

Over time, this repeated pressure can lead to:
• Worn or flattened teeth
• Cracks or fractures
• Jaw pain and stiffness
• Morning headaches

Because it happens unconsciously, most people don’t realize it until the damage is already visible.

If you wake up with jaw discomfort or notice changes in your teeth, it may be a sign your body is grinding while you sleep.

Alzheimer’s disease has long been considered a purely brain-based condition, but new research suggests the mouth may play a critical role. Scientists have detected Porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacteria behind chronic gum disease, along with toxic gingipain enzymes near tau tangles in brains of people who had Alzheimer’s.

Remarkably, these bacterial enzymes were also found in individuals showing early brain changes but no dementia symptoms, hinting that infection might initiate the disease rather than emerge later. Animal studies support this idea: oral bacteria spreading to the brain increase amyloid beta buildup, a protein that disrupts normal brain function.

Current research is exploring drugs that block gingipains. In mice, these treatments reduced infection and brain inflammation, suggesting that maintaining gum health could play a role in preventing or slowing Alzheimer’s progression.

Many people believe brushing twice a day is enough for healthy teeth. However, brushing alone cannot remove hardened deposits known as tartar (dental calculus). Tartar forms when plaque minerals solidify along the gumline, creating rough surfaces that trap bacteria and food particles. Over time, this buildup can irritate the gums and contribute to gum disease, often beginning with subtle warning signs like bleeding during brushing, persistent bad breath, or mild gum recession.

Because tartar cannot be removed with toothpaste or home remedies, dentists recommend dental scaling and polishing at least twice a year. This professional cleaning removes hardened deposits from areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Polishing then smooths the enamel surface, making it harder for plaque to attach again and helping maintain healthier gums.

Research also shows that oral health is closely connected to overall health. Chronic gum infections have been associated with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes complications, and some respiratory problems. Regular dental checkups and cleanings help prevent these issues and keep your smile — and your body in better shape.

Those wedge-shaped grooves near the gumline are known as abfraction lesions, a form of non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL). They develop when repeated bite stress often from grinding (bruxism) or a misaligned bite causes subtle tooth flexure. Over time, this pressure creates microfractures in the enamel and dentin.

Although these lesions may not always cause discomfort, they can weaken tooth structure and create areas where plaque easily accumulates. Aggressive brushing or frequent acidic exposure may accelerate the damage, increasing the risk of sensitivity or structural fractures.

Treatment focuses on reducing bite stress with solutions like a night guard, adopting gentle brushing habits, and restoring affected areas using composite or glass ionomer materials to protect long-term tooth health.

If your child’s baby teeth have small gaps between them, that is usually a healthy developmental sign.

Primary teeth are naturally smaller than permanent teeth. The spaces you see are not “gaps to fix” — they are biological room reserved for the larger adult teeth that will erupt later. This is part of normal jaw growth and helps reduce the risk of crowding during the mixed dentition stage.

When baby teeth sit tightly together with no spacing, the jaw may not have enough room for the wider permanent incisors. Studies show that closed contacts in primary teeth are associated with a higher probability of future crowding. It does not guarantee braces — but it is an early risk indicator dentists monitor.

Early dental visits allow us to track jaw development, eruption patterns, oral habits, and airway health. Monitoring growth at the right time is far more effective than waiting until crowding becomes obvious.

Researchers at Columbia University have linked gum disease to Alzheimer’s-type brain changes visible on MRI — including measurable shrinkage in memory-related brain regions.

In a separate 12-year U.S. study, older adults who received periodontal treatment showed nearly 40% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who did not treat their gum disease.

This is not about cavities.
This is about chronic inflammation.

Periodontal disease is a long-standing bacterial infection. When gums bleed, pathogenic bacteria and inflammatory mediators can enter the bloodstream.

Over time, this systemic inflammatory burden is being investigated as a contributor to neurodegenerative changes.

While research continues, the oral–brain connection is no longer theoretical. It is measurable.

Nighttime oral care is one of the simplest modifiable habits available:

• Daily flossing to disrupt interdental biofilm
• Thorough brushing along the gumline
• Tongue cleaning to reduce bacterial load
• Professional periodontal evaluation and treatment when needed
