One of the biggest misconceptions about functional dentistry is that there’s ONE “correct” answer for every patient.
There isn’t.
Some people online will tell you fluoride is absolutely necessary for every human being on earth.
Others will tell you fluoride is toxic and should never touch your body.
Then there’s the nano-hydroxyapatite debate.
Some people believe nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste is one of the best advancements in remineralization and cavity prevention.
Others worry about nanoparticles and avoid it completely.
Some patients thrive with fluoride.
Some do better with hydroxyapatite.
Some need microbiome-focused oral care with xylitol, probiotics, or herbal toothpaste.
Some patients are extremely high cavity risk and need aggressive remineralization support.
Others have a very healthy oral microbiome and don’t.
This is where functional dentistry separates itself from “one-size-fits-all” dentistry.
The goal is not blindly following trends from either side of the internet.
The goal is personalization.
Your oral microbiome, cavity history, airway health, diet, dry mouth risk, medications, genetics, inflammation levels, sleep quality, gum health, and overall systemic health ALL matter when building a dental care plan.
Sometimes fluoride is appropriate.
Sometimes it’s not.
Sometimes nano-hydroxyapatite is the better option.
Sometimes both are useful.
Sometimes the answer starts with improving nutrition, nasal breathing, saliva flow, or the oral microbiome itself.
Functional dentistry asks a different question:
“What does THIS patient need?”
Dentistry should be individualized healthcare, not copy-and-paste healthcare.
That’s the conversation we’re going to start having more often here.
