One of the most common questions we hear: “How do I know if I’m a candidate for MARPE or MIND?”

The answer depends on several factors, including age, skeletal maturity, anatomy, and the safety & predictability of expansion. While some patients can achieve excellent outcomes with MARPE alone, others may benefit from a surgically assisted approach like MIND.

The goal is always the same: achieving the safest, most stable, and most predictable result possible.

Stay tuned as we continue breaking down the factors that help guide treatment decisions.

There is nothing more meaningful than earning a patient’s trust during one of the most important decisions of their life. Corrective jaw surgery is not just about transforming facial structure, it’s about improving quality of life, confidence, breathing, function, and overall well-being.
I’m incredibly grateful for every patient who allows me to be part of their journey. Hearing that a patient felt comfortable, heard, and supported throughout the process is something I never take for granted. Building genuine relationships, listening carefully, and providing compassionate care are just as important to me as the surgical outcome itself.
Thank you for trusting me and my team every step of the way. It is truly an honor to help patients change their lives through this work. 🙏

From a patient’s perspective:

When breathing finally works the way it’s supposed to, everything changes.

This started with one apneic episode—and the recognition that the airway itself was structurally compromised. From there: clear diagnosis, thoughtful planning, and surgical care focused on the root cause, not just symptoms.

“I didn’t know this is how breathing was supposed to feel.”

That’s the outcome that matters.

If you’re noticing signs of airway issues—snoring, fatigue, disrupted sleep, narrow arches, skeletal deficiency—it’s worth a deeper evaluation.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Coppelson and The Breathe Institute to get clarity on what’s actually going on.

Honored and grateful to have presented at this past week’s Breathe Course. It’s always inspiring to be surrounded by colleagues who share a passion for airway health and recognize the vital role proper nasal breathing plays in truly holistic patient care.

Connecting with so many like-minded professionals who are committed to advancing airway-focused dentistry reminds me how powerful our community is when we come together to learn, share, and grow.

Thank you to everyone who made this course such a meaningful experience. Looking forward to continuing the conversation and advancing airway-centered care together.

Chronic mouth breathing does more than affect how we breathe as it can influence how the face and jaws develop.

When nasal airflow is reduced, posture often shifts to oral breathing. This can lead to a lower tongue position, decreased lateral support of the maxilla, and ultimately a narrower upper jaw. As the maxilla narrows, arch perimeter is reduced, frequently presenting later as dental crowding.

Traditionally, crowding has often led to extraction based treatment plans. However, when appropriate, maxillary expansion should also be considered to address the underlying structural limitations rather than simply creating space by removing teeth.

Understanding airway, growth, and structure allows us to treat more than just the alignment, it allows us to treat the cause.

Last week, I shared Dr. Korouri’s testimonial and his experience with maxillary expansion via M.I.N.D.
Today, I want to show you the anatomical changes behind the story.

In these before-and-after images, you can see measurable progress already:

• Nasal cavity aperture increased from 20.7 mm to 24.5 mm
• Intermolar width increased from 31.5 mm to 38.5 mm

These structural changes matter. At his most recent follow-up, he reported noticeable improvements in nasal breathing and sleep quality, the kind of progress that makes a meaningful difference beyond the measurements.

It’s incredibly rewarding to pair objective data with meaningful improvements in how patients feel and function every day.

This patient recently completed nasomaxillary expansion via M.I.N.D. and took the time to share how much it’s improved his sleep and breathing. Hearing him describe deeper sleep, easier breathing, and a real change in daily energy is exactly why we do what we do.

He was incredibly kind, supportive, and appreciative throughout the process and I’m truly grateful for the trust he placed in our team. Being able to help improve not just smiles, but quality of life and sleep, is something I never take for granted.

Better breathing. Better sleep. Better life.

I had an awesome conversation on the Podcast breaking down the benefits of Mandibular Skeletal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO).

MSDO is a powerful surgical technique that allows us to safely and minimally-invasively expand the lower jaw, creating more room for the teeth, tongue, and airway. By increasing space in the oral cavity, we’re able to improve breathing, support better sleep, enhance facial balance and allow for further expansion on the maxilla that results in a proper bite.

Schedule a consultation with me by emailing drcoppelson@thebreatheinstitute today to discuss how to improve your sleep quality and your candidacy for this procedure.

This patient underwent Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO), a surgical procedure that gradually expands the lower jaw at the midline. By widening the mandible, we create more space in the dental arch and oral cavity, allowing teeth to align more naturally and improving overall bite function.

MSDO doesn’t just benefit the mandible. By creating additional space in the lower arch, it increases the amount of maxillary expansion that can be safely achieved, enhancing coordination between the upper and lower jaws.

See how jaw alignment, airway improvement, and facial balance all come together in one incredible transformation.
