Is dental bonding right for you? For small blemishes, bonding is usually a great solution. Bonding requires minimal preparation, and it can usually be completed in a single visit. Another advantage is that anesthesia is rarely needed. But if the area to be treated is large, other options may be better. Dr. Delmont will gladly explain the advantages of each treatment so that you can make an informed decision.

What is dental bonding? A procedure that uses resin to enhance teeth by eliminating spots, chips, and stains. In some cases, it can also close wide gaps, repair decay, and alter the shape of the tooth. How is it done? After a thorough cleaning, an etching gel is used to slightly roughen the surface of the tooth. Then color-matched resin is applied and hardened. The final result is whole, healthy, and beautiful teeth.

You’re on vacation, and you forgot your toothbrush. What do you do until you can get to the store to buy another one? Rinsing your mouth vigorously with water will remove some of the cavity-causing bacteria. And if you didn’t forget your toothpaste too, you can put some on a clean washcloth or your clean finger as a makeshift toothbrush.

Should I floss? The American Dental Association answers “yes, definitely” and recommends daily flossing. Why? Using floss or other interdental cleaner helps remove plaque, a sticky, bacteria-laden film that can cause cavities. Plaque that is not removed by brushing or flossing can eventually harden into tartar, a rough substance that collects along your gum line and can cause gum disease. Flossing can remove plaque, but only your dentist can remove tartar.

Hooray! It’s National Wine and Cheese Day! But, is wine bad for your teeth? While it has long been believed that the acid in wine damages tooth enamel, a new study suggests that wine may actually be helpful in the fight against tooth decay and gum disease. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports that wine contains compounds called polyphenols which inhibit harmful bacteria from sticking to teeth and gums. In addition, the high levels of phosphate and calcium in cheese strengthen teeth, and cheese helps moderate the wine’s acid pH. So, enjoy National Wine and Cheese Day!
