Cracked tooth syndrome is where a tooth has incompletely cracked, but no part of the tooth has yet broken off. Sometimes it is described as a greenstick fracture.
Signs and symptoms:
Sharp pain when chewing;
- Sharp pain when drinking or eating cold/hot beverages or foods;
Pain when eating or drinking sugary substances.
Some habits that might contribute are clenching or grinding, chewing ice, pen, hard candy, or other similar objects.
Most commonly involved teeth are mandibular molars, in particular mandibular first molar.
The treatment goal is to protect the tooth and the pulp through:
Crown restoration that is placed over the damaged tooth;
- Root Canal therapy, in case of severe damage to the pulp;
- Extraction, is the last option - if the crack extends below the gum line.
