When someone comes in with tooth pain, we're not guessing at the cause. We're narrowing it down.
Temperature sensitivity that disappears in a second or two usually points to exposed dentin or a receding gumline. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is gone tends to mean the nerve itself is inflamed, which is a different conversation entirely. Pain on pressure suggests something structural. Pain that wakes you up at night suggests the nerve is failing.
Those distinctions decide everything that follows. One version is a filling or a desensitizing treatment. Another version is a root canal that saves the tooth. The X-ray is what tells us which one you're actually dealing with, because none of it is visible from the outside.
