As Paul Harvey said, “Now you know the rest of the story.”

Before Samuel C**t became one of America’s most famous industrialists, he made his first fortune making people laugh. In the early 1830s, the young inventor toured North America as “Dr. Coult,” presenting public nitrous oxide demonstrations. According to the National Park Service, he saved the profits from these laughing gas shows to help finance the fi****ms company that would eventually bear his name.

The surprising part is the dental connection.

A decade later, Connecticut dentist Horace Wells attended a nitrous oxide exhibition by Gardner Quincy C**ton. After seeing a participant injured without apparent pain, Wells recognized the gas could transform dentistry. His experiments helped launch inhalation anesthesia, and two years later William T. G. Morton demonstrated ether anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital on what became known as Ether Day.

This history reminds us that innovation rarely comes from one brilliant moment. Humphry Davy recognized nitrous oxide’s potential. Traveling lecturers popularized it. Wells saw its dental application. Morton brought it into surgery.

C**t’s lesson was that innovation must be communicated before it can spread. Wells’ lesson was that careful observation can change medicine.

Sometimes the path to one of dentistry’s greatest breakthroughs begins in the most unexpected places.

The connection between disrupted sleep and ADHD-like behavior is striking.

Here's a different perspective on cholesterol levels:

"among 12.8 million adults, actual sweet spot of total cholesterol is between 210 and 249—about 100 points above what most doctors consider ideal."

Cholesterol reduction is a big focus of modern medicine, but it may not be as deadly as we’ve been led to believe.
