Dr. Patel has an important lesson at the end of this one - stay with him. 👀

A patient was referred to us for a fractured tooth - straightforward extraction and implant placement. But before anything was touched, we did what we always do: a full CT scan to look at the complete picture.

What we found changed everything.

Periapical lesions on the adjacent tooth. Something that had nothing to do with why the patient came in, but everything to do with how we needed to proceed. Extraction and implant placement were put on hold. The patient was sent to an endodontist for a root canal first. Because placing an implant next to an untreated infection isn’t just bad timing, it’s a setup for failure.

The pearl? 🩸

“Always look at the surrounding anatomy. It may influence your care.”

This is the difference between treating a tooth and treating a patient. Between doing what was asked and doing what’s right. It’s why imaging matters, why thoroughness matters, and why you want a surgeon who looks at the whole picture, not just the referral.

Wisdom Teeth Wednesday 🦷 and this one hits different.

In 2023, Dr. Patel flagged this wisdom tooth and recommended treatment. The patient felt fine. No pain. No urgency. So they waited. ⏳

Fast forward to today - same tooth, new X-ray, and a very different story. What was once a manageable situation has now become a problem for the molar right next to it. More damage. More treatment. More cost. All of it preventable.
