Today is National Bring Your Child To Work Day! We welcomed Juliet, Gina’s daughter, to our practice for a few hours of professional exploration.

“This day has always meant a lot to me. Growing up, I looked forward to the chance to follow my dad to work. I was curious and excited to see the other side of my dad’s world. He loved what he did, and it showed. His passion for his career was contagious, and for a while, I was sure I wanted to be a civil engineer just like him.

But after a few bring-your-daughter-to-work days (and a few too many holes in the ground), I realized that maybe his dream wasn’t mine. Still, those days sparked something bigger: conversations with my dad where he stressed the importance of finding your own passion, and the importance of doing work that excites you. He always made it clear that no matter what path I chose, I should give it 100%. Work hard, care deeply, and never settle for just going through the motions. These conversations had a profound impact on every academic and professional decision I have ever made.

Now, having Juliet spend time with me today, seeing me in my element and doing what I truly love, I hope she sees that same kind of passion I once saw in my dad. My career may look different than his, but I’d like to think the spark is the same. And maybe, just maybe, this tradition will help her start thinking about what lights her up too.
