Dr. Richard Nichols is a general dentist specializing in the treatment of occlusion and TMJ disorder problems. A graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry , he has been in private practice for 20+ years. Dr. Nichols has operated his own primary office in Bailey, Colorado for over 17 years, and has a second practice in Littleton, Colorado. This means that his patien

ts receive basic dental care, and can also obtain top-level care and cosmetic dentistry and beyond that in the same dental office. Dr. Nichols also specializes in preventive treatment. So, beyond basic maintenance, he works with the patient to make adjustments to prevent future damage to teeth and surrounding structures. Since 1991, Dr. Nichols has practiced adhesive dentistry exclusively. All the restorations are tooth-colored, using composites for fillings, and porcelain for crowns. On cases involving bruxism (clenching or grinding of teeth), the use of crowns with gold or precious alloy on chewing surfaces prevent any chance of fracture of the crown.

Cleanings

Are cleanings really that important? Can home care take the place of a professional dental cleaning?

Even ideal home care can't take the place of a professional cleaning. Over time plaque and calculus (tartar), will build up on teeth, effecting enamel and gum tissue. Regular brushing and flossing alone doesn't pe*****te what has built up, and brushing for longer or harder can harm your gum tissue. Professional cleanings remove built up plaque and calculus in a safe and healthy way, and provide an opportunity for a dental professional to exam and identify any other potential problems at their earliest stages.

Bi- annual dental cleanings are the standard minimum, but that doesn't mean that more frequent cleanings aren't right or necessary for some people. The need for more frequent cleanings is also nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone has different genetic tendencies and different dental needs. Our job is to identify what your specific needs are, and help you create and maintain a health plan that is individualized to you.

Why do we provide our patients with glasses to wear during their visit, and why are they orange?

We provide our patients with glasses to protect their eyes from any liquids or particles that may disperse during the procedure. It's the same reason that the staff wear glasses or face sheilds too. All of the materials we use are safe for your mouth, but not your eyes.

We use orange glasses because the orange color neutralizes the bright blue light that is emitted from the curing light. The curing light is very bright and can cause a headache if it is looked at directly, so we protect our patients with orange colored glasses that change the bright blue light to a neutral yellow. This protects our patients' eyes from strain and discomfort. The doctor looks through an orange colored "sheild" when he is operating the light, protecting his eyes as well.

“I have suffered with TMD pain, treatments and surgeries for years. After moving to Colorado from out of state, I did extensive research to find a new TMD doctor. When I call the office to speak to a nurse to see if the office would be able to handle my extensive history and complicated issues, I was surprised to be transferred to Dr. Nichols himself! He spent at least 15 minutes talking with me about my past experiences and current symptoms. He was incredibly knowledgeable and I knew it would be well worth my time to get his opinion. When I went for my appointment which was very soon, I was impressed by the office staff too. Dr. Nichols spent a lot of time with me, he was very detailed oriented and checked everything! At the end of his exam, I received detailed information about what he found and options on how to proceed. He has helped me in such an unbelievable way! He continues to follow my progress, talk with me, change things as we need to and genuinely care about my wellbeing. I cannot say enough about his knowledge if TMD and his ability to solve or greatly improve the issues associated with this problem.
