5 things I look at during your exam (that you don't realize)

A dental exam isn't just "any cavities?" There's a whole story happening in your mouth, and I'm reading all of it.

1️⃣ Wear: I'm not just noting worn teeth, I'm asking why. Acid erosion, bite instability, grinding, airway issues? Wear is a symptom. I'm after the cause.

2️⃣ Bite health: Cracks, TMJ discomfort, muscle fatigue, tooth mobility. Solve the issue now, avoid the bigger problem later.

3️⃣ Soft tissue: Tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, throat, lips. I'm watching for subtle changes in color or texture that need a closer look.

4️⃣ Beyond your mouth: Jaw joints, facial symmetry, lymph nodes, skin around your face and neck. Dentists are often the first to catch something's off.

5️⃣ The bigger picture: Treating a cavity is the easy part. Understanding how it happened and preventing the next one? That's the real work.

This is the difference between treating teeth and treating people.
