Sometimes parents notice that something about their child’s bite looks off. Maybe a top tooth sits behind a bottom tooth, the back teeth do not line up properly, or the jaw seems to shift when biting down. These can be signs of a crossbite.
A crossbite happens when certain upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth instead of outside them. It can affect the front teeth, back teeth, or both. While it may look like a small issue, it can sometimes reflect how the teeth or jaws are developing.
Parents may notice:
🦷 a tooth that looks “backward”
🦷 upper teeth sitting inside lower teeth
🦷 jaw shifting to one side
🦷 uneven chewing
🦷 a bite that looks off-center
A crossbite is more than a cosmetic concern. In some children, it can affect jaw growth, cause uneven wear on the teeth, or make the bite less stable over time. That is why early evaluation can be so helpful.
Not every child with a crossbite needs treatment right away. Some need monitoring, while others may benefit from early orthodontic or orthopedic treatment. The right timing depends on the child’s age, growth, and the type of bite issue involved.
Treatment may include expanding the upper jaw, guiding growth, or using braces or aligners later as part of a larger plan.
At Jawz Orthodontics, we look at more than straight teeth. We evaluate how the bite, jaws, and smile are developing together so we can recommend the right next step—whether that is treatment now or careful monitoring.
If you have noticed something that seems off about your child’s bite, an orthodontic evaluation can provide clarity, reassurance, and a plan that makes sense.
