Flossing is often the most "negotiated" part of a dental routine. We hear a lot of reasons why it gets skipped, but many of those reasons are actually based on common myths that might be doing your smile a disservice.
🛑 Myth 1: "My gums bleed when I floss, so I should stop."
This is the most common thing we hear! It’s natural to want to stop when you see blood, but it’s actually a signal from your body.
The Reality: Gums usually bleed because bacteria and plaque have caused inflammation. They aren't bleeding because you’re flossing; they’re bleeding because they haven't been flossed enough.
The Fix: If you floss consistently for about 7 to 10 days, the inflammation will go down, and the bleeding will stop. Think of it like starting a new workout—you might be a little sore at first, but you get stronger!
🛑 Myth 2: "I brush really well, so I don't need to floss."
Even the most expensive electric toothbrush in the world cannot reach between your teeth.
The Reality: Each tooth has five surfaces. Brushing only cleans three of them. If you don't floss, you are leaving about 35-40% of your tooth surfaces untouched.
The Fix: Flossing is the only way to "clear the gap" where cavities and gum disease love to start.
🛑 Myth 3: "Flossing creates gaps between my teeth."
Some people worry that pulling string between their teeth will push them apart or create "black triangles."
The Reality: Flossing doesn't create gaps; it removes the buildup (calculus) that was filling the gap. If you notice a new space after you start flossing, it’s usually because the swelling in your gums has gone down, revealing the true, healthy shape of your teeth.
The Fix: Keeping that space clean ensures your bone and gums stay at a healthy level.
🛑 Myth 4: "I’m too old for flossing to make a difference."
It’s never too late to start a healthy habit!
The Reality: As we get older, we are actually at a higher risk for root cavities and gum recession. Flossing becomes even more important for maintaining the teeth you have for the rest of your life.
The Fix: Start today. Your smile will thank you five, ten, and twenty years from now!
