Got Milk?

Concerns about making and keeping a full milk supply often go hand in hand with tethered oral tissues. Ashley Kester RN MSN, IBCLC has great points to consider, and a plan for you if you need more help.

🥛MILK SUPPLY🥛

Let’s have a quick chat about some main factors in milk supply and how it all works.

The first 2 weeks are super crucial for overall milk supply! Lots of milk removal help lay down prolactin (your milk making hormone) receptor sites. Hand expression of colostrum or pumping once milk comes in if baby isn’t latching well really help. The more receptor sites you lay down, the more milk you can make in the future!

Milk supply then continues build over the next few weeks and usually sets in at about the 6-12 week mark. Once the hormones left over from pregnancy are gone, the body goes into strictly supply and demand.

Your breasts have a unique capacity and “magic number”. Several things can factor into both of these but simply put, this helps you know how many times per 24 hours you need to adequately remove milk to either maintain, increase, or decrease your milk supply. Your capacity also helps us know how long of a night time stretch you can go without removing milk!

Getting help with supply and breast/chest feeding in the first 2 weeks is super crucial. It doesn’t mean you can’t get it up after this point, it just means we need to work at it a little bit more. This can mean getting a better pump, adding in herbal galactogogues, getting ties released, etc.

Feel free to PM if you need help and would like to get scheduled! Slots go fast.

Never underestimate the POWER of your TONGUE! 💪👅💥🧠🫀🗣️🤩😛

If you had a quick-fire hack to access your own capabilities to optimize your health, would you do it?

Your body can heal, or harm itself.

It is the job of the autonomic nervous system that has two ‘gears’, heal or survive. When you’re in the right gear, your body is working with you.

Most people don’t know it, but tongue posture is one of the most effective ways to click that gear stick into ‘heal’.

The roof of the mouth is innervated with cranial nerves that trigger the brain to stay in this calm and healing state.

Learning to seal the tongue to the roof of the mouth when not eating or speaking, keeps your body in this mode.

It’s a complex muscle action, and the biggest benefit comes from the awareness to train the tongue right to the back of the soft palate.

You can feel this spot with your finger as the roof of the mouth goes from hard to soft. These areas of the throat are innervated by the vagus nerve.

‘Vagal tone’ is the amount of nerve action your body is sending down this cranial nerve.

The vagus nerve is the only cranial nerve that runs right throughout the body to many organs.

It sends these calming, healing messages to your gut, where 80% of the body’s immune system is stored.

Starting the vagus nerve helps the body deal with any gut or immune issues.

Tongue posture keeps the muscles of the neck strong and open supporting the upper airway for good nasal breathing.

That includes learning to seal it up there in the unconscious state of sleep, to keep breathing (autonomic tone) calm, and to prevent mouth breathing and snoring.

Want to get started? Do this quick exercise.

1) In a closed mouth state, feel the tongue seal upwards to the roof of the mouth
2) The tip should be on the gum behind the upper front teeth
3) The BACK should be touching the soft palate (you may need to work on it)
4) The sides of the tongue should also have pressure to the palate (not splaying through the teeth).
5) Now, ACTIVATE the tongue and feel all of these three points at once, front, sides, and back of the tongue.

Feel the activity in your neck and throat area.

These are the muscles you need to train for tongue seal.

How did it feel for you?
