**Nothing Makes Us Happier Than Updates Like This 🤍**

Hearing that a child is making progress and beginning to enjoy foods they previously avoided is incredibly rewarding.

Every child’s journey is different, and we’re so grateful when families take the time to share their experiences with us.

Thank you, Lindsey, for trusting the TTAC team to be part of your family’s journey. We’re so happy to hear he’s doing so well and expanding the foods he enjoys! ✨

Mealtime can tell us more than what foods a child likes or dislikes.

Eating requires the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw to work together to bite, chew, organize, and swallow food.

Some signs this may be harder than expected include:

✓ Long mealtimes
✓ Food pocketing in the cheeks
✓ Frequent sips with bites
✓ Messy or difficult eating
✓ Avoiding foods that require more chewing
✓ Extra jaw, lip, or facial movement

One sign alone doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. But when several patterns happen consistently, it may be worth looking more closely at oral function.

Instead of only asking, “What does my child eat?” watch how they eat.

Seeing these patterns at home? TTAC can help. Visit TongueTieMaryland.com.

Take a moment to notice your child when they’re relaxed. Are their lips gently together, or does their mouth tend to stay open?

When nasal breathing is comfortable, the lips generally rest together without strain. Consistent open mouth posture may occur with nasal congestion, mouth breathing, altered tongue posture, or differences in oral muscle function.

Things to notice:

• Lips apart during quiet activities
• Mouth breathing while watching TV
• Open mouth during sleep
• Snoring or noisy breathing
• Dry lips or mouth upon waking
• Difficulty comfortably closing the lips

The goal isn’t simply to say, “Close your mouth.” It’s to understand why it stays open.

One moment doesn’t tell us much. Repeated patterns do.

✨We had the honor of working with this mom, Lindsay, who came to us for her own tongue-tie release after we released her first child’s restrictions. After experiencing the life-changing relief of improved function and comfort for herself and her son, she knew exactly where to turn for her second child.
Seeing this family thrive together—from mom to her little ones—is why we do what we do.
✨Is it genetic?
One of the most common questions we hear is: “If I have a tongue tie, does that mean my children will, too?”
The short answer is: Yes, there is a strong genetic component.
While we are still learning about the specific genes involved, tongue ties (ankyloglossia) often run in families. If you or your partner have a history of oral restrictions, it is highly likely that your children may also be born with one.
✨Why it matters:
Early identification is key. Because these restrictions are often hereditary, we encourage parents who have had their own releases to bring their children in for a functional assessment—even if they seem to be “doing okay.” Addressing these ties early can prevent compensatory habits from forming and support optimal development for breathing, sleeping, and feeding.
You don’t have to live with the limitations of a restricted tongue. Whether you’re an adult seeking relief or a parent concerned about your little one, we are here to help your family find function and freedom.

Why Nasal Breathing Matters

Breathing happens all day and all night, mostly without us thinking about it.

When the nasal airway is clear, the nose is designed to warm, humidify and filter incoming air before it reaches the lower airway.

Nasal breathing also works together with oral resting posture.

But when a child persistently breathes through their mouth, the answer isn’t simply to remind them to close it.

We need to ask:

Is nasal breathing comfortable?
Is there congestion or obstruction?
What is the tongue doing at rest?
Does mouth breathing also occur during sleep?

Mouth breathing is a pattern with possible underlying contributors—not a behavior to shame or repeatedly correct.

More Than Symptoms. We Find Solutions.

Mouth breathing.
Snoring.
Difficulty feeding.
Restless sleep.
Speech concerns.
Chronic fatigue.

These aren't diagnoses—they're clues.

Our goal isn't simply to manage symptoms.

We ask why those symptoms are happening in the first place.

Understanding the underlying cause helps guide more personalized care and better long-term outcomes.

Many airway-related concerns don't begin with obvious breathing problems.

They may appear as:

• Mouth breathing
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Snoring
• Restless sleep
• Difficulty focusing
• Teeth grinding
• Frequent waking
• Forward head posture

While none of these signs alone confirms an airway problem, they may warrant a more comprehensive evaluation when they occur together.

Early recognition creates more opportunities for early intervention.
