🦷 Tetracycline staining is a type of intrinsic tooth discoloration caused by taking tetracycline antibiotics while the teeth are developing — typically during pregnancy, infancy, or early childhood. Instead of surface stains that can simply be polished away, the medication becomes incorporated into the actual tooth structure, creating deep gray, brown, or banded discoloration.

These cases can be some of the most emotionally impactful smile transformations because patients often spend decades hiding their teeth despite excellent hygiene. Whitening alone usually cannot predictably correct severe tetracycline staining due to how deeply the pigment is embedded within the enamel and dentin.

In this case, porcelain restorations created a dramatic transformation by restoring brightness, symmetry, and confidence while still maintaining a natural appearance. ✨

One of the biggest challenges in treating tetracycline staining is balancing opacity with vitality — masking the dark underlying color without creating teeth that look flat or artificial. The artistry is in making them look bright and believable.

Sometimes teeth aren’t actually “too small” — they’re just hidden beneath excess gum tissue. This condition is called altered passive eruption, where the gums fail to recede to their ideal position after the teeth erupt, leaving a shorter-looking smile.

A simple laser gum lift and a small amount of Dysport neurotoxin to relax the upper lip revealed her natural tooth shape to create a more balanced smile — with nothing done to the teeth themselves.
