What is tartar, and is it the same thing as plaque?

Not quite. Plaque is the soft, sticky film of bacteria that continually forms on your teeth. Regular brushing and cleaning between your teeth helps remove it.

When plaque isn't removed, it can harden into tartar, also called calculus. 📐

Here's the important difference:
▪️ Plaque can be removed at home with regular brushing and cleaning between your teeth.
▫️ Once plaque becomes tartar, it needs to be removed professionally.

That's one reason routine dental cleanings matter even when you're brushing every day.

Hi! I’m Dr. Berens, and I’m so excited to be here!

I recently moved to the Cincinnati area from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I’m looking forward to getting to know my new community and especially my new patients.

Funny enough, I wasn’t the biggest fan of going to the dentist as a kid, to put it lightly. Then I broke my front tooth on Christmas Day. My dentist was kind enough to come in and fix it, and he made the whole experience feel more fascinating than scary. That experience stuck with me and eventually helped lead me to dentistry myself.

A little more about me: I’m one of **12 kids**, and I’m engaged to an amazing neurology resident at UC Health. When I’m not in the office, there’s a good chance I have an iced caramel macchiato in one hand and I’m hunting for an antique shop with the other.

Since I’m new to Greater Cincinnati/Dayton, I love asking my patients what I need to see, eat and do around the area. So far, I’ve discovered Swensons Drive-In but I’m going to need more recommendations!

I’m so excited to be part of Family Dentistry and, most importantly, I’m excited to meet and treat you.

Many people use the terms interchangeably, but there's an important difference.

**Plaque** is a soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. The good news? It can be removed with daily brushing and flossing.

**Tartar** is what happens when plaque is left behind long enough to harden. Once that happens, it can't be removed at home and requires a professional dental cleaning.
