KEEP YOUR SMILE STRONG!

Dr. Wainwright and the staff have been witnessing a large increase in enamel damage/decay in our patients teeth. The main culprit of this is something we all know and love, sugary and acidic drinks. Although they are delicious, they cause extreme damage and wear on your enamel over time and create decalcification or “white stains” as most call them. These “white stains” are signs of early decay, which can be very hard to reverse without the help of dental work after treatment. Here are some tips, tricks, and alternatives on how to keep your teeth healthy and happy, not only during your orthodontic journey, but for a lifetime! 🙂

Avoid Sugary & Acidic Drinks to Prevent Cavities

🦷 What Drinks Can Harm Your Teeth?

Many popular drinks contain large amounts of sugar and acid that can damage tooth enamel and lead to cavities, including:
- Pop / Soda
- Energy Drinks (Alani, Redbull, Monster, local coffee shop drinks, etc.)
- Sports Drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, Propel, etc.)
- Sweet Tea
- Lemonade
- Fruit Punch
- Sweetened Coffee Drinks
- Flavored Waters with Added Sugar
- Juice Drinks and Fruit Cocktails
- Flavor Packets/Syrups for Water

Why Are These Drinks Bad for Teeth?

Sugar Feeds Cavity-Causing Bacteria
- Bacteria in your mouth use sugar to produce acids.
- These acids attack tooth enamel and cause cavities.
Acid Weakens Tooth Enamel
- Acidic (citric acid, phosphoric acid, etc.) drinks can wear away the protective outer layer of teeth.
- Once enamel is damaged, teeth are more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity.

Choose Tooth-Friendly Drinks Instead
✅ Water (Best Choice!)
✅ Plain Milk
✅ Unsweetened Tea
✅ Sparkling Water (without added sugar or citric acid)

Healthy Habits for a Healthy Smile
✔ Drink water throughout the day.
✔ Limit sugary and acidic beverages.
✔ If you do drink them, have them in a small time frame rather than sipping all day.
✔ Use a straw when possible to reduce contact with teeth.
✔ Rinse your mouth with water afterward.
✔ Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
✔ Visit your dentist regularly.

Remember:
The more often teeth are exposed to sugar and acid, the greater the risk for cavities. The problem is compounded by the hygiene challenges that come with braces and aligners. Choose water more often and help keep your teeth healthy, strong, and cavity-free!
